Sparse\, timeless\, and unamplified\, they’re older than the sounds Shoulders saluted on albums like 2023’s All Bad\, with its loud\, whooping anthems for roadhouses and sweaty dancehalls. Here\, Shoulders isn’t shouting over a band. He isn’t bringing a crowd to its feet with dance-ready tempos. Rather\, he’s exploring another side of his craft by stepping up to a ribbon microphone as a solo performer\, delivering each song with acoustic instruments and a voice that’s equal parts country croon\, Appalachian yodel\, and high-lonesome field holler. As he explains it\, Refugia Blues isn’t just a call to action; it’s a call to rest\, too. \n“This is my Nebraska\,” he says\, nodding to Bruce Springsteen’s lo-fi acoustic record from 1982. “Some people listen to Bruce for the E Street Band and the big radio hits\, but I like the intimacy and rawness of Nebraska instead. I’d like to think of Refugia Blues as a little window into the heart\, as opposed to the drumbeat of a revolution.” \nEven so\, Refugia Blues resolutely pushes for change. Shoulders’ interpretation of American roots music has always been more progressive and punky than the trucks-and-beers conservatism that passes for modern-day country\, and he isn’t checking his activism at the door anytime soon. Refugia Blues does dive into personal territory\, from “Bored Fightin'” (a self-effacing look at Shoulders’ reputation as a left-of-center radical) to the heart-on-sleeve love song “Tatum Spring\,” but it balances the micro with the macro\, too. Topics like climate collapse\, radical anthropology\, generative disruption\, and southern identity run throughout the record\, adding weight to Shoulders’ melodies\, balancing his witty humor with topical weight. The purpose\, he says\, is to utilize his music as “a Trojan Horse that can be accepted by people who don’t hear anything to challenge their sense of comfort and superiority. That’s always been the goal — to say what needs to be said\, but to intersperse it with joy\, humor\, and melody.” \nIt’s a balance that Shoulders has struck in the past\, but never so nakedly alone as he does on the opening track\, “Apocalypse Never.” He wrote the a cappella ballad in the front seat of his band’s shuttle bus\, taking a hard look at each passing town\, noting all the “individualized apocalypses” — houseless encampments\, impoverished communities\, barren cornfields — that unfolded on the other side of the windshield. “Our world has been through countless apocalypses\,” he says. “The refusal to give in to the direness of our circumstances\, while still acknowledging it\, is key to surviving this moment in our history.” \nFor Shoulders\, singing isn’t just a passion; it’s practically a birthright. Born to a musical family with deep roots in Arkansas\, Appalachia\, and Louisiana\, he grew up listening to old-world folk music\, black gospel\, and other sounds that existed long before genres were even invented. “My vocal style is rooted as much in growing up in mountainous Arkansas and having to shout across vast distances to greet my neighbors as it is in my family’s very old way of singing\,” he says. “The way I sing is older than capitalism. Being part of this tradition isn’t meant to be regressive; it’s meant to be liberating. There were time before cash registers and factories\, where people sang like this when they sowed their corn\, and I’m trying to embody that.” \nRefugia Blues was recorded in a home studio outside of Fayetteville\, Arkansas. Tracked to analog tape in two inspired days and laced with light touches of guitar\, banjo\, and fiddle\, the album explores the slower\, softer textures of Shoulders’ music without pulling any punches. On his bare-boned cover of Randy Travis’ “Diggin’ Up Bones\,” he slows down the uptempo classic to a warbling waltz. On “Deux Hurry\,” he taps into his inner Roger Miller\, using wordplay to make light of the darkness that lives within all of us. On “Hill Folk\,” he nods sympathetically to the southerners who’ve witnessed their cultural inheritance become commodified and commercialized over the past half-century. And on the brave\, bold “Dixie Be Damned\,” he sings about “manifest destitution” and the sickness of contemporary American consciousness\, packaging everything into a three-and-a-half minute country gem that’s as tuneful as it is topical. \nBy bridging the gap between past and present\, Shoulders speaks pointedly and poetically about today’s problems\, even as he nods to styles that existed long before the 21st century. “When you listen to the origins of country music in the ’20s and ’30s\, you’re hearing the voice of southern rural dissent against coal companies\, repression\, and depression\,” he says. “The old ballad singers of the Ozarks were conduits for current events\, documenting not only their own lives\, but also dispossession and economic strife on a much bigger scale. Being part of that great stream of rural protest music is something I’m trying to tap into. I want to say things that feel timeless\, deep\, and rooted\, but also touch on topics like endless war and a government collapsing into dictatorship. I want to be part of that tradition of dissent.” \nAt once academic and accessible\, Refugia Blues isn’t just a deep dive into southernness\, but also into Shoulders himself. Released during an era of big-budget country-pop smashes\, it stands tall as something else entirely: a raw\, resolute version of American country music\, punctuated with humor and heavy insights\, stacked high with songs that go down easy but linger in the minds of those willing to invest the time. \nKASSI VALAZZA \n“Sometimes it takes four or five tries to realize something just isn’t working\,” says Kassi Valazza. “I wrote this after my thirteenth try.” She’s referring to the song “Roll On” specifically\, but the stagnating pull of repeating patterns—and the brutalizing work of breaking them—inform every song on her new album From Newman Street. “In songwriting and in life\, you can’t keep expecting the same thing to work every time.” \nValazza grew up between Prescott and Phoenix\, Arizona. She penned her first song at age ten but in those early efforts to perform\, found herself halted by stage fright of a clinical level. “I’ve gone to therapy for it\,” she says\, half-laughing. She didn’t stop writing music but she let less paralyzing means of expression lead the way\, eventually enrolling in arts school for painting\, an illustrative instinct that inevitably reveals itself in her vivid songwriting. It wasn’t until she relocated to the Pacific Northwest as an adult that Valazza picked back up the proverbial—and actual—guitar. \n“Zach Bryson was kind of like the honky tonk ambassador of Portland when I got there\,” Valazza says. “He was so welcoming and encouraging.” She discovered an inspiring\, supportive artistic community\, a less rigid relationship with musical output\, and then—vocal nodules. “It was actually kind of the best thing that could have happened\, because I learned about the crossover of physical and mental that takes place in performance.” Recovery entailed recognizing the reflexive functions of the voice in response to anxiety; as is the case throughout the human body\, stress reactions can be damaging. “Because I suddenly understood what was happening with my voice\, I could handle it\, wield it. I felt more confident.” Valazza recorded an album with Bryson in an old-house-turned-studio. It was an informal\, friendly endeavor\, though not at all small. “I think probably thirty people contributed\,” she says. “I listen back to that album and I think ‘this was me learning how to do this.’ I can hear that moment in time.”  \nValazza’s debut Dear Dead Days fused the Southwest’s rustic romance with the Pacific Northwest’s rocky realism and garnered Valazza a cult following. She landed a deal with Fluff & Gravy\, a label known for launching earthy\, emerging treasures like Anna Tivel and Margo Cilker\, and toured with folk favorites including Melissa Carper and Riddy Arman. Her sophomore album Kassi Valazza Knows Nothing followed\, a glimmering set of sonic talismans among Ann Powers’ Favorite Songs of 2023 for NPR and Bandcamp’s Best Country Music of 2023\, with praise from KEXP\, Uncut\, MOJO\, and Brooklyn Vegan to boot. \nBy the time Valazza was ready to record her third album\, she had spent a decade in Portland—and that\, she realized\, was enough. “As someone with anxiety\, I always want to know what’s going to happen\,” she says. “But knowing can be limiting. Getting comfortable with the uncomfortable\, that’s growth. That’s what this album’s about\, really.”  \nOn “Weight of the Wheel\,” a weepy slide guitar underscores Valazza’s listless lament: All things look the same / From the pillow on my bed / I’m stressed out I’m far away / There’s dizzy dancing in my head. The song sounds like urgency\, grief\, surrender\, and embrace—all at once. It’s feeling like some kind of fight to outgrow / The way I fear slowing down before I’m old. By 2022\, that dizzy demise of cyclical living had set Valazza still—in a basement apartment there in Portland. “You’re going to be a different person after every album\,” she says. “And you have to keep moving forward.”  \nSights set on Nashville\, Valazza landed in New Orleans. “It wasn’t the plan. I spent three months there between tours\, and it just kind of happened.” The bright newness of The Big Easy illuminated fresh inspirations and unexpected love. But it also cast a stark light on Valazza’s sense of self; in a new place\, you can see more clearly what you want to be\, as well as what you haven’t been. “I discovered the less likeable parts of myself in that time\,” Valazza says. Album standout “Your Heart’s a Tin Box” encapsulates precisely this\, with a cynical-yet-sunny likeness to Joni Mitchell and lyrical acuity: I moved down to New Orleans / Thinking love would reappear / But people tell you everything / but what you wanna hear / You relied on fixated company / Now you’re drowning in your ego’s gluttony. The patterns of her Portland life had stalled Valazza. It wasn’t the city’s fault so much as the natural consequence of complacency\, the stagnance that comes with too much of the same. Valazza knew she was due for a personal evolution\, and when faced with those innate\, bristling pangs of change\, could soothe herself with that certainty. \nThe track sequence on From Newman Street is audibly intentional—from a deep lull and dull itch\, to a barbed clash with cognitive dissonance\, to humble submission\, and an ultimate\, open-armed acceptance of new life. Poetically enough\, half the songs on the upcoming album were written in Portland\, the other half in New Orleans. Valazza returned to her former hometown to record with Matt Thomson at Echo Echo Studios\, and titled the release From Newman Street in tribute to an apartment she lived in deeply and left with heavy heart. The album is as much a fond farewell as it is a fervent step forward.  \nValazza made the official move to New Orleans in February of 2024. “Coming from placid\, wintry Portland straight into Mardi Gras—I would not recommend it.” She recalls the time with humor\, grace\, and sensitivity for her past self\, qualities that shine through the album. “I’ve always been a believer that music is only good if it’s really raw\, really honest—probably coming from a place of hurt\,” Valazza admits. “But I’m trying to embrace chaos these days\, and bring a little more light into my life.”

I want to know where I’m going without GPS\,” she sang from behind the wheel. Soon\, the idea snowballed into a list of desires that spanned existential\, spiritual\, and mundane; romantic to platonic to familial; at once wildly ambitious yet piercingly relatable; all set to a catchy melody that blends her pop instincts with country storytelling and the raw immediacy of a basement punk show. In other words\, she was on her way to another classic Esther Rose song. \nThis precise blend has made the Santa Fe-based artist one of her generation’s most beloved songwriters: someone whose live shows are known to conclude in mass tears and group hugs. Still\, something was different this time. “For me\, these songs felt like revelations\,” she explains\, comparing the 11-song record to a memoir\, alive with kinetic storytelling and personal insight. In its newly direct and stirringly nuanced writing\, you’ll hear about rock bottom encounters\, shifting relationships with substances\, evolving perspectives on adult partnership\, and\, as evidenced by those early lines in “Want\,” a few jokes along the way. Vivid and bracing\, Want places you in the passenger seat while each of these feelings arrive. \nTo match the multi-dimensional tone of the writing\, Rose has made the most adventurous\, hardest-hitting record of her career. Working with producer Ross Farbe and recording live-to-tape in Nashville’s Bomb Shelter\, she travels as far as she’s been from the stripped-down classic country of celebrated early work like 2017’s This Time Last Night and 2019’s You Made It This Far. Following the wide-open serenity of 2023’s momentous Safe to Run\, she now leans toward confrontational arrangements full of distortion and full-band spontaneity\, never sacrificing a classicist’s gift for melody that makes each song instantly memorable. \n“Making this album was the most beautiful experience of my life\,” Rose explains\, describing the euphoria of sharing these intimate stories among trusted collaborators like guitarist Kunal Prakash\, drummer Howe Pearson\, bassist Gina Leslie\, and pedal steel player John James Tourville. She also enlisted friends like singer-songwriter Dean Johnson (who duets in the stunning “Scars”) and New Orleans rock band Video Age (who she co-wrote “tailspin” with) to flesh out her vision. Ranging from stark solo performances to grungy blowouts\, the album maintains a steady focus while never staying too long in one place. (Like David Bowie\, Rose would arrive at the studio in carefully chosen outfits to set the tone for each session\, guiding her bandmates to follow the mood.) \nTo reach this level of confidence\, Rose had to recalibrate her entire relationship with music. When she concluded the tour for Safe to Run\, she considered quitting altogether\, feeling exhausted and depleted\, seeing no way to continue at her relentless pace. But after quitting drinking and finding new momentum in therapy\, she devoted herself to the new material\, letting ideas flow without worrying about the final product. She considered making an electro-pop album; a self-titled acoustic record. Eventually\, she began categorizing her disparate ideas under the working title The Therapy LP. \n“There are things that I have tiptoed around in my writing—and in my life—that I wasn’t ready to look at\,” she reflects\, “and now I’m going for it.” The results are breakthroughs like “Had To” and “Rescue You” that tether her tightly structured melodies to narratives that bring distressing subject matter down to earth. And where her love songs in the past often found universal resonance in simple questions about heartbreak\, these ones explore complex subjects like accountability and true connection: “Baby\, I’ve got scars that you cannot see/Love them for what they gave to me\,” she sings boldly in “Scars.” \nThis level of vulnerability is new from Esther Rose—a vow to be known more fully by her audience\, herself\, and the people in her life. “Each time I write a new album\, I go a little deeper\,” she says. “For me\, it’s been very challenging to stay… I’m always packing the Subaru in my mind.” And while she can still craft a road song like nobody else—“Two days on the highway\, solo drive/Today is the greatest day of my life\,” she sings in “tailspin”—she now searches for stability\, even when that means confronting internal chaos. The album’s closing song\, titled “Want Pt. 2\,” returns Rose to her old hometown of New Orleans during Mardi Gras\, watching a Rolling Stones cover band in a bar she frequented back in the day. It’s a fitting finale for the strongest\, widest-reaching album of her career—a moment when the past\, present\, and future collide\, a panorama of emotions\, the kind of party you never want to leave. \nSHARON SILVA AND ERISY WATT \nSharon Silva and Erisy Watt are heading out together this summer\, playing a run of West Coast shows from Seattle down through the California coast and desert. \nBoth Los Angeles–based musicians\, they bring distinct voices united by a shared love of songwriting and performing live. Sharon\, a founding member of The Wild Reeds\, writes songs that blend indie rock\, folk\, and Americana while often exploring themes of grief\, personal growth\, and relationships. Her debut solo album\, Underachiever\, traces her journey from arriving in Los Angeles as a teenager through years of touring\, the loss of loved ones\, and the peace that comes from learning to lean on yourself. \nDescribed by No Depression as “what contemporary folk sounds like at its peak\,” Erisy Watt writes songs that move between quiet contemplation and playful curiosity. After stepping back and reimagining his songwriting approach\, Nebeker challenged himself to write an entire albumin a month\, then brought those songs to his bandmates with a newfound sense of receptivity. “I told myself that whatever songs came through in that month would be for the love of the band and music we make together\,” says Nebeker. “Instead of being controlling in the studio\, I wanted to let the songs live and breathe with the band as an entity. By the time we finished\, it was the most joy we’d ever had in making an album together.” \nProduced by Josh Kaufman (The Hold Steady\, David Wax Museum)\, In the Shadow of the Holy Mountain brings a potent new energy to the elegantly composed folk/indie-rock of past LPs like2016’sAnd Then Like Lions. Since she quit her day job in 2022\, she has released three full length albums and played over 350 shows across the country. Starting in college\, Jon spent ten years making beautifully unusual music with The Daredevil Christopher Wright. He has since released three solo records with his most recent record\, “9 Songs About Love\,” released in November of 2020. Offering these stark\, vulnerable\, performances has afforded closeness in several musical communities. To have these relationships\, built through songwriting\, is a cherished experience. To him\, there is a no greater feeling of place. Seeing and living in so many parts of the country has offered a diverse perspective on what it means to be American\, and his writing embraces this with often floral descriptions of environment that mirror emotional experiences. Travis picking and timeless lyricism anchor these songs in the folk tradition\, while melodic chord progressions and unpredictable song structure challenge the genre with sincerity. The recordings\, first and foremost\, serve the songs\, but often take risks with orchestration to shape a sound entirely of its own. On the first of April last year\, Michael Hurley\, folk legend and indispensable presence in the Portland music scene\, died at the age of eighty-three. “I was absolutely gutted\,” says Alela\, who didn’t just revere Hurley but knew him well. She performed in a tribute show for Hurley\, and in that collective mourning\, found solace and inspiration. “It was an epiphany to realize how much I missed my community. I felt very clear about what I wanted in that moment—I want to be alive. I want to see live music. I want to play it.” \nThough she’d taken the solo route on her last handful of releases\, Alela was interested in a new way forward. Plucking the day away in the attic of her 1892 Victorian home\, she found new songs flickering in the dusty light—and a desire to play them with people.  \nAlela met drummer Danny Austin-Manning at Clay Street Studios one night and he introduced her to co-producer Sam Weber (Madison Cunningham\, Anna Tivel). Along with Sebastian Owens on bass\, they recorded fifteen songs in less than five days—all live in the very attic where she wrote them. Anna Tivel contributed backing vocals and violin. Peter Lalish\, of the band Lucius\, added guitar. Fellow Pacific Northwesterners Kati Claborn and Luke Ydstie of Blind Pilot and AC Sapphire provided overdubs of all kinds. Alela’s vision for uninhibited music and revived\, creative kinship thrust her into a new season. \nThe result is an 11-track set ranging from lulling to raw to cinematic\, with Alela’s mellifluous voice a lively and affecting instrument throughout. The lyrics reveal an artist with the particular kind of strength required to face pain without getting lost—an ability Alela has honed over a lifetime of songwriting\, during which her lustrous discography has garnered major critical acclaim from the likes of Pitchfork\, NPR Music\, The Guardian\, and plenty more. The stripped-down\, DIY folksongs span their young adulthood\, beginning in their teens and taking them through their mid 20s. Based in Astoria\, Oregon\, they are two multi-instrumentalists who have come together from traditional music backgrounds and found a sound that weaves through layers of influence that include early Appalachian stringband music\, classic country\, bluegrass and original folk. Gabrielle’s fiddle style is the result of being raised in the Old Time music hotbed of Portland\, OR and being exposed to the fiddle traditions of the Southeast US through years of traveling to festivals and learning from some of the greatest players in the genre. She gained notoriety as a clawhammer banjo player through her work with the Macrae Sisters\, and formed the Horsenecks with Barry after the two met at a music festival in 2012. Barry’s banjo and guitar playing range from thrilling and high-octane to moody and captivating\, and his versatility shines whether flatpicking\, playing clawhammer\, or driving three-finger banjo.Barry has been a luminary in his home town of Liverpool’s music scene for over 20 years\, playing lead guitar with cult heroes Tramp Attack\, banjo with Liverpool’s popular bluegrass party band The Loose Moose Stringband\, and with multiple groups in the UK’s bluegrass and old time scene. Both songwriters bring together their background in traditional music and modern influences across many genres to create a catalog of songs that speak to their place in the evolving story of traditional music. Together\, they create a distinctive sound\, their deft musicianship\, creative instincts and powerful harmony singing front and center\, earning them a place among the leading interpreters of Old Time music today. \nTHE HACKLES \nThe Hackles are a folk collaboration from Astoria\, Oregon. Catchy horn lines and sultry vocals soar over grooves that you can’t help but move to. World rhythms\, funky bass lines and soulful\, jazzy vocals coalesce to form a sound that’s both upbeat and warm. The band is led by vocalist and guitarist Reb Conner\, whose songs reach for hope in a world under pressure.\nReb’s vision is to create dance music that both touches the heart and inspires a life lived in pursuit of the silver lining.\nShe is supported by her creative partner\, sax and keys player Leon Cotter\, (a touring member of the California Honeydrops)\, as well as some of Portland’s heaviest hitters: Cyrus Nabipoor on trumpet\, Milo Fultz on bass\, Kirk Kalbfleisch on drums and Carmelo Torres on percussion. \nReb & the Good News released their 2nd album “Silver Lining” on July 18th 2025. This album is a collection of upbeat\, optimistic music that was written during the pandemic. While Reb faced the grief and uncertainty of those trying years\, she wrote songs of hope to help her make it through. \nAt 19\, Reb’s love affair with music began by playing songs around a beach fire in her coastal hometown of Lincoln City. During a subsequent trip to Europe with a guitar\, jazz was the music that most spoke to her\, and she returned to the States to pursue an education. Reb went to music school at the age of 21 not yet knowing a major scale. With a lot of catching up to do\, her education lasted all of 7 years\, starting at LCC and finishing at the University of Oregon where she focused on Jazz guitar. Reb left her last collaborative project\, High Step society in 2018\, and moved from Eugene to Portland ready to tell her own story and bring her own aesthetic to life.
