Most of us never see one—but when we do\, it’s unforgettable. In the Columbia River Gorge\, northern pacific rattlesnakes quietly go about their lives beneath our feet\, helping control rodent populations and supporting the balance of local food webs. So why do these shy\, gentle animals inspire so much fear? And what do we lose when we let myths shape our relationship with them? \nJoin wildlife ecologist Adrian Slade for a closer look at the Gorge’s only venomous reptile. Discover their fascinating biology\, annual rhythms\, complex social lives\, and strong fidelity to den sites passed down through generations. Learn how they respond to wildfire\, habitat changes\, and human pressures—and how their presence signals a healthy landscape. \nWhether you’re a hiker\, land steward\, or just snake-curious\, this talk will offer practical tips for coexisting with rattlesnakes and a deeper appreciation for their subtle yet vital presence on the landscape. Let go of fear and meet the rattlesnake as it truly is: not a villain\, but a neighbor.\n*Adrian will be bringing live snakes for viewing as part of the in-person presentation. \nAbout the Speaker: \nAdrian Slade is a naturalist and herpetologist based in Central Washington\, where she has spent the past decade observing snakes in their natural habitats. A lifelong snake appreciator\, her work is guided by the desire to give back to the quiet\, misunderstood creatures who bring her joy and peace.\nHer research focuses on the natural history\, behavior\, and conservation of Pacific Northwest reptiles – especially northern pacific rattlesnakes and the imperiled striped whipsnake. She holds a B.S. and M.S. in Biology from Central Washington University\, where she studied under Dr. Dan Beck. Her graduate research examined the effects of utility-scale solar energy on reptiles in Southern California. \nToday\, she leads a Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife–funded project to map the distribution and support the recovery of striped whipsnakes in the mid-Columbia Basin shrubsteppe. Her Improv troupe in CA performed improv and sketch comedy monthly. Her goal in starting this Improv Club is to have fun while teaching improv techniques\, and forming an Improv & Sketch Comedy Group. She’s here to create\, laugh\, and enjoy the community that comes along with it. This is a safe environment to express\, build self-confidence\, and learn a bit more about character based improv and acting. Orchards stretch across the hillsides\, tended by growers whose livelihoods rely quite literally on their sense of place. From microclimates and soil conditions to insect cycles and wind reports\, their work blends inherited wisdom with modern science. And the agricultural community reflects a diversity of backgrounds – homesteaders\, Finnish\, Japanese\, Mexican\, among many – all of whom have contributed to the Gorge’s agricultural knowledge and legacy. \nTogether\, local farmers anchor an agricultural industry that generates more than $200 million and the Gorge ranks in the top three for pears and cherry production. Yet behind those numbers is a way of life that is anything but simple. What does it take to grow fruit in a place where frost can erase a season overnight? What’s the best way to prune a tree – or hundreds of them? How do families keep farms alive in the face of rising costs\, shifting regulations\, and the constant pressure of development? And what might the Gorge look like without them? \nJoin us for a conversation with farmer Lisa Perry\, who\, along with her husband Ricardo Galvez\, tends one of the many family farms that make up the Gorge’s rich agricultural community. She’ll share stories of their challenges\, successes\, and the deep connection to place that keeps them farming in the Gorge. \nAbout the Speaker: \nLisa Perry is a fourth-generation farmer\, born and raised in the Columbia River Gorge. She grew up in the tight-knit community of Pine Grove\, spending her childhood checking irrigation boxes and riding tractors alongside her dad. When her father lost the farm\, Lisa was forced to confront what it truly meant to be a farmer—and whether she wanted to continue that legacy. As she considered her own future in agriculture\, new questions emerged – from simply\, why plant one crop over another? To the more complex\, like why are farmers so often the last to be paid for their work? \nDespite the uncertainty\, Lisa found her way back to agriculture. She spent summers and weekends working on her stepfather’s 100-acre fruit farm\, learning hands-on from an experienced grower. In 2017\, Lisa and her husband\, Ricardo Galvez\, had the opportunity to start their own venture. They founded Out On A Limb Farm after purchasing a 14-acre fruit orchard from Ricardo’s grandfather. \nToday\, Lisa works full-time on their farm in Dukes Valley\, just southwest of Odell\, where she and Ricardo grow pears\, apples\, plums\, peaches\, and nectarines. She holds a degree in Theatre and Visual Arts from University of Texas Dallas and studied Improv at The Groundlings in Los Angeles California. Her Improv troupe in CA performed improv and sketch comedy monthly. Her goal in starting this Improv Club is to have fun while teaching improv techniques\, and forming an Improv & Sketch Comedy Group. She’s here to create\, laugh\, and enjoy the community that comes along with it. This is a safe environment to express\, build self-confidence\, and learn a bit more about character based improv and acting. Some of the roles you may have seen Emily Joyce in include The Narrator in Rocky Horror 2023 at Big Britches\, Riff Raff in Rocky Horror 2024 at Big Britches\, or the Musicals Bat Boy\, and Nine to Five\, at Columbia Center for the Arts.

DESCRIPTION:“The Black Infinity House art exhibit is focused on highlighting the visions\, expressions\, experiences and imaginations of local\, black artists across multiple mediums.  \nThe premise of the show comes from a concept I grasped when reading The Black Aesthetic II. The early pages of the book’s discussion illuminate the fact that Blackness is infinite. People may try to define what it means to be black; but it comes in all different forms\, especially as we\, as a people\, constantly create new spaces and phenomenal forms of culture in order to to express ourselves and own our incredible power in safe environments —specifically made for us\, by us.  \nThis artists’ showcase is an experiential exhibit with three quadrants in the gallery that together are meant to demonstrate black art through the process of its creation\, consumption and cultivation. Art will be displayed in three sectors called The Studio\, The Living Room\, and The Porch\, respectively.”

They can be deadly\, but the deep roots of volcanoes also provide a foundry for critical minerals that enable modern society. In these ways and others\, volcanoes have inspired scientists and artists alike for thousands of years. The Volcano Listening Project explores connections between scientific research and artistic perspectives of volcanoes\, developing tools to represent data through sound that draw equally from data science\, volcanology\, and new music. ‘Sonification’\, the display of data using sound\, provides a powerful way to understand complex signals such as are emerging with new monitoring capabilities and can enable volcano science. In equal part\, sonification of volcanic data can trigger an emotional response\, and thus lead to compelling music. This program will showcase volcano music and the science behind it\, led by University of Oregon professor/violinist Leif Karlstrom and featuring an ensemble of internationally recognized musicians: Todd Sickafoose\, Idit Shner\, Adam Roskiewicz\, and Jonny Rodgers. Featuring composer\, Marc Evanstein. \nAbout the Performers:\n\nLeif Karlstrom came from a family of professional musicians and earth scientists\, and has built a career in both domains. As a violinist he toured nationally and internationally with the bluegrass band Front Country and Small Town Therapy. As a scientist he is an associate professor at the University of Oregon\, where he runs a research group that studies volcanic processes from current activity at Kilauea volcano to climate-altering Large Igneous Province events. He started the Volcano Listening Project in 2023. \n\nTodd Sickafoose is a composer\, producer\, and bassist widely known for his work with Ani DeFranco (since 2004) as well as in jazz ensembles with the likes of Adam Levy\, Jenny Scheinman\, Nels Cline\, and Allison Miller\, as well as his own group. His work orchestrating and producing music for the Broadway musical Hades Town earned him a Grammy award for Best Musical Theater album and a Tony award for Best Orchestration. \n \nIdit Shner is professor of saxophone and jazz studies at the University of Oregon\, with an active performing and recording career across genres that includes commissioned premieres of new music nationally and internationally. She leads her jazz quartet in the Pacific Northwest and is an award-winning teacher. \nJonny Rodgers is a musician and composer known for his work as Cinder Talk and numerous film scores. DESCRIPTION:Doors at 4:30 and 6:30 p.m.\, shows at 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. PDT. (If the event is sold out\, unclaimed seats will be released to the waitlist fifteen minutes prior to the show.) \nWhere: Columbia Center for the Arts\, 215 Cascade Ave.\, Hood River\, OR 97031 \nSTORY: Volcanic eruptions can perturb global climate\, build mountains\, and reshape human civilizations. They can be deadly\, but the deep roots of volcanoes also provide a foundry for critical minerals that enable modern society. In these ways and others\, volcanoes have inspired scientists and artists alike for thousands of years. The Volcano Listening Project explores connections between scientific research and artistic perspectives of volcanoes\, developing tools to represent data through sound that draw equally from data science\, volcanology\, and new music. ‘Sonification’\, the display of data using sound\, provides a powerful way to understand complex signals such as are emerging with new monitoring capabilities and can enable volcano science. In equal part\, sonification of volcanic data can trigger an emotional response\, and thus lead to compelling music. This program will showcase volcano music and the science behind it\, led by University of Oregon professor/violinist Leif Karlstrom and featuring an ensemble of internationally recognized musicians: Todd Sickafoose\, Idit Shner\, Adam Roskiewicz\, and Jonny Rodgers. Featuring composer\, Marc Evanstein. \nAbout the Performers:\n\nLeif Karlstrom came from a family of professional musicians and earth scientists\, and has built a career in both domains. As a violinist he toured nationally and internationally with the bluegrass band Front Country and Small Town Therapy. As a scientist he is an associate professor at the University of Oregon\, where he runs a research group that studies volcanic processes from current activity at Kilauea volcano to climate-altering Large Igneous Province events. He started the Volcano Listening Project in 2023. \n\nTodd Sickafoose is a composer\, producer\, and bassist widely known for his work with Ani DeFranco (since 2004) as well as in jazz ensembles with the likes of Adam Levy\, Jenny Scheinman\, Nels Cline\, and Allison Miller\, as well as his own group. His work orchestrating and producing music for the Broadway musical Hades Town earned him a Grammy award for Best Musical Theater album and a Tony award for Best Orchestration. \n \nIdit Shner is professor of saxophone and jazz studies at the University of Oregon\, with an active performing and recording career across genres that includes commissioned premieres of new music nationally and internationally. She leads her jazz quartet in the Pacific Northwest and is an award-winning teacher. \nJonny Rodgers is a musician and composer known for his work as Cinder Talk and numerous film scores.
