SUMMARY:Book of Days
DESCRIPTION:Fridays & Saturdays at 7pm | Sundays at 2pm | May 8–23 \nIn the heart of a small Missouri town\, Ruth Hoch has landed the role of a lifetime: Joan of Arc in the local community theater’s production of Saint Joan. But when her employer\, the powerful owner of the town’s cheese factory\, is killed in what everyone calls a hunting accident\, Ruth can’t shake the feeling that something is terribly wrong. \n\n\n\nAs she digs deeper\, she finds a community more comfortable with comfortable lies than with dangerous truth. Neighbors close ranks. Secrets multiply. And Ruth\, like the saint she’s been cast to play\, must decide how far she’s willing to go for what she knows is right. \n\nWinner of the American Theater Critics Association Award for Best New Play\, Book of Days is Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lanford Wilson at the height of his powers. a razor-sharp\, deeply American thriller that weaves murder mystery\, community drama\, and moral reckoning into a single unforgettable evening.\n\n“Wilson sees the world clearly and represents it without grudge-bearing or edulcoration\, and keeps the play moving forward with unflagging vivacity in plot and subplots alike.” — John Simon\, New York Magazine\n\n“A wonderfully executed black comedy that burrows slowly beneath the cherry surface of contemporary American small-town life\, and down into the darker impulses that underpin it. You don’t know whether to laugh or be appalled by much of what you see\, so you laugh and are appalled.” — Alistair Highet\, Hartford Advocate\n\n“A significant addition to the Lanford Wilson canon… combines Wilson’s signature character-based whimsy with an atypically strong narrative and politically charged underpinnings.” — Chris Jones\, Variety\n\n\n“Lively storytelling by one of our best playwrights.” — Lawrence DeVine\, Detroit Free Press \nGET TICKETS

SUMMARY:SEEKING PLACE: Simple Objects telling stories.
DESCRIPTION:SEEKING PLACE: Simple Objects telling stories.\nBY MACRAE WYLDE \nGallery Exhibit | MAY 1 – 24 \nOpening Reception: May 1 from 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM.\nPigment objects and sculpture built from color gathered off the ground. Platforms for color. A quiet reminder that we all come from somewhere. \nArtist Statement\nDirt\, rock\, clay\, mud\, found in different places\, all having unique identifiable characteristics. It is important because it comes from somewhere\, we all come from somewhere. It is part of the story\, not the plot but a theme that shapes the novel. Where something comes from\, its origins will always be evident. \nIt is also important because I saw it\, and for some reason\, stopped to pick it up. Was it the color\, or that it was accessible? The beginning of these pieces was the random collection of colored rock. I did my first show of pigment panels over thirty years ago. Something triggered the desire to collect color again\, enough to make it part of any trip. Not essential\, but a possibility\, that if I came across a good color\, I would think to stop\, and have a way to collect it. \nThe pieces are platforms for color. Forms and shapes designed to make you see the color\, not alone\, but next to something else. It could be the wall behind a panel\, or the space around a sculpture. It could be something that you see through a piece\, for they are intended to be seen together so each one has both its origins and its own character. They are unique and yet related. Deceptively simple\, work that captures your attention with color and form\, drawing you in\, then giving a platform for contemplation. \nWe all come from somewhere. We all breathe air and drink water. Simply being human gives us more in common than any differences can divide. \nThere is no way to escape from the times we live in. I am deeply affected by the daily barrage of injustice and cruelty that occurs. This body of work is not an escape\, but a reminder\, that we all come from somewhere. We all breathe air and drink water. A reminder that simply being human gives us more in common than any differences can divide. The land we walk on has both a shared beauty and an implied conservation. \nThis work is intended to be taken in with time\, to allow the viewer to slow down\, to think about how we are connected. This show combines work from the last few years\, the pigment objects with a few simple pieces that both ask questions and tell stories. \n \nAbout the Artist\nMacRae is a sculptor and pigment artist whose work has shown widely across the Pacific Northwest and beyond\, with public installations in Auburn\, Washington; Vincennes\, Indiana; and The Dalles\, Oregon. Born in Boston in 1964\, he studied at Colorado College\, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston\, the College of Santa Fe\, and the International School of Art in Umbria\, Italy\, with additional training at the Northwest School of Wooden Boat Building. \n \nHis work has been recognized with a 1st Place award at the 7th Biennial Salmon Sculpture Competition at the San Angelo Museum of Art\, the Curator’s Award and 1st Place at Best of the Gorge\, and the 2nd Place Critic’s Award at Big Art\, Hood River. Recent shows include Art Seen at the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts\, Spectra at the Arts Council of Lake Oswego\, and Something New on Bainbridge Island.

SUMMARY:Rattlesnakessssss: Shedding the Myths to Meet the Snake with Adrian Slade
DESCRIPTION:Doors at 6:00 p.m.\, show from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. PDT. \n(If the event is sold out\, unclaimed seats will be released to the waitlist at 6:45 p.m.) \nWhere: Columbia Center for the Arts\, 215 Cascade Ave.\, Hood River\, OR 97031 (All ticket-holders also get access to the livestream) \nSTORY:\nThey’re almost invisible\, blending into the basalt and bunchgrass. Most of us never see one—but when we do\, it’s unforgettable. In the Columbia River Gorge\, northern pacific rattlesnakes quietly go about their lives beneath our feet\, helping control rodent populations and supporting the balance of local food webs. So why do these shy\, gentle animals inspire so much fear? And what do we lose when we let myths shape our relationship with them? \nJoin wildlife ecologist Adrian Slade for a closer look at the Gorge’s only venomous reptile. Discover their fascinating biology\, annual rhythms\, complex social lives\, and strong fidelity to den sites passed down through generations. Learn how they respond to wildfire\, habitat changes\, and human pressures—and how their presence signals a healthy landscape. \nWhether you’re a hiker\, land steward\, or just snake-curious\, this talk will offer practical tips for coexisting with rattlesnakes and a deeper appreciation for their subtle yet vital presence on the landscape. Let go of fear and meet the rattlesnake as it truly is: not a villain\, but a neighbor.\n*Adrian will be bringing live snakes for viewing as part of the in-person presentation. \nAbout the Speaker: \nAdrian Slade is a naturalist and herpetologist based in Central Washington\, where she has spent the past decade observing snakes in their natural habitats. A lifelong snake appreciator\, her work is guided by the desire to give back to the quiet\, misunderstood creatures who bring her joy and peace.\nHer research focuses on the natural history\, behavior\, and conservation of Pacific Northwest reptiles – especially northern pacific rattlesnakes and the imperiled striped whipsnake. She holds a B.S. and M.S. in Biology from Central Washington University\, where she studied under Dr. Dan Beck. Her graduate research examined the effects of utility-scale solar energy on reptiles in Southern California. \nToday\, she leads a Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife–funded project to map the distribution and support the recovery of striped whipsnakes in the mid-Columbia Basin shrubsteppe. She is passionate about bridging science and public understanding through storytelling to dispel myths\, foster coexistence\, and share the quiet wonder of a life spent alongside snakes. \nAbout Sense of Place: \n  \n \nFor 16-years\, Sense of Place has connected people through place and storytelling. \nOur flagship speaker series features people with unique knowledge of the Columbia River Gorge and who consider the natural and cultural history that has shaped this place. Guests have included: scientists\, tribal members\, authors\, farmers\, and many others from throughout the Pacific Northwest. The stories shared deepen our understanding of the Gorge and strengthen our connection to the landscape and to each other. \nLearn more about Sense of Place and check out our online archive and past events HERE.\nFor more information\, visit senseofplacegorge.org or follow on Instagram @senseofplacegorge. SUMMARY:A Poet (Un Poeta) | Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Synopsis (English) \nMiddle-aged and erratic\, Oscar is a failed writer who has given up on life. Unemployed and living with family\, he wanders the streets of Medellín in a drunken stupor\, lamenting the state of literature in his home country\, where he has succumbed to the cliché of the tortured artist. However\, the opportunity to mentor a young student offers a chance at redemption\, if he doesn’t screw it up first. In a performance marked by darkly comic pathos\, first-time actor Ubeimar Rios stars in Simón Mesa Soto’s Un Certain Regard Jury Prize-winner A Poet\, a raw and riotous farce about how good deeds are often met with the universe’s idea of cruel and unusually poetic punishment.

SUMMARY:This is an Old Woman | Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us on March 6th from 5:30-7:30 for the opening reception of This is an Old Woman By Gorge Photography Club. \nWhat does it mean to be an “old woman” today? She’s here to create\, laugh\, and enjoy the community that comes along with it. This is a safe environment to express\, build self-confidence\, and learn a bit more about character based improv and acting. Some of the roles you may have seen Emily Joyce in include The Narrator in Rocky Horror 2023 at Big Britches\, Riff Raff in Rocky Horror 2024 at Big Britches\, or the Musicals Bat Boy\, and Nine to Five\, at Columbia Center for the Arts.
