DESCRIPTION:The Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association \n20th Anniversary Season \nPiano Summit \nGorge Sinfonietta with Kathryn Apland and Mitchell Jett Spencer\, soloists \nThursday and Saturday\, June 18  and 20  at 7 PM\, Sunday June 21 at 2 PM \nWy’east Middle School Performing Arts Center \nOver the past twenty years\, the Gorge Sinfonietta has presented hundreds of concerts featuring a wide spectrum of music\, from beloved classics to exciting new compositions. Two of the most memorable concerts featured Kathryn Apland playing the Grieg Piano Concerto\, and Mitchell Jett Spencer performing Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto. For its final concert of the 2025-26 Season\, the Sinfonietta has invited both soloists to return in a concert called “Piano Summit.” \nConductor Mark Steighner said that the concert’s title has two meanings. “In the world of geopolitics or business\, a summit brings together talented people to share ideas. But of course the other meaning is the apex\, the top of the mountain. This music is the absolute summit of late 19th century Romanticism and piano virtuosity.” \nSteighner said that having two piano concertos on one program is pretty rare\, and something the Sinfonietta has never done. Mitchell Jett Spencer will be performing Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini\, which takes the listener on a complex\, dazzling musical journey that’s filled with romance\, drama and humor. \nKathryn Apland will perform Franz Liszt’s Totentanz\, which is also a theme and variations\, but based on an ancient Gregorian chant melody\, the Dies Irae\, or “Day of Anger.” Totentanz is one of the composer’s most dramatic\, progressive and genuinely surprising works. In many ways it foreshadows later 20th century composers like Bartok.” \nSteighner said\, “I am in awe of both Kathy and Mitch’s technical skills\, their deep musical understanding and their willingness to take on these incredibly difficult challenges. I guarantee audiences will be impressed.” \nThe program will be rounded out by Johannes Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture and an excerpt from Gustav Mahler’s Third Symphony. \n“Mahler is one of my absolute favorite composers\,” Steighner said. “I’ve been listening to his music since I was in high school or before. The Sinfonietta has never played any music by Mahler because it’s too big\, usually requiring an immense orchestra. But I couldn’t step away from the podium without doing at least a little bit.” \nThe Piano Summit concerts will be Steighner’s last performance with the orchestra. He will be retiring after founding CGOA and its ensembles twenty years ago. Steighner’s replacement will be Lars Campbell\, recently hired after an exhaustive search. Campbell is the longtime director of the Clackamas Community College Wind Ensemble and a professional trombonist\, having performed with the Oregon Symphony and Seattle Symphony. \n“Lars will helm the Sinfonietta for an exciting new chapter in its development\,” Steighner said. “I’m pleased he was willing and able to join us.” \nThe recent performances of Roads Not Taken were entirely sold out\, so Steighner urges audiences to buy tickets well in advance. The concerts will be Thursday\, June 18 and Saturday\, June 20 at 7 PM\, and Sunday\, June 21 at 2 PM. Concerts will be at the Wy’east Middle School Performing Arts Center at 3000 Wy’east Rd in Odell. Tickets are available at gorgeorchestra.org. Adults $25; CGOA members $20; students/youth FREE (HS & college students show ID at the door). DESCRIPTION:Hey Chuggers! We’re heading back to Hood River to run the Twin Tunnels Trail! This will be a 9 mile run (4.5 each way\, but feel free to turn back whenever you like). It is\, by far\, the most beautiful run that RGC does every summer. You won’t be disappointed! Afterwards\, we’ll head into Hood River\, grab some lunch at Pfriem and then check out the other wineries/taprooms that the city has to offer. Let’s make a day out of it! \nWe’ll meet in the parking lot across from Hindustani Restaurant (2680 Old Columbia River drive Hood River\, OR) at 10:00 Am and then we’ll convoy to the trail head which is just a mile away. Fronted by visionary songwriter and keyboardist Andy Krissberg\, the group draws its name from a strange\, cult-leaning text unearthed during a cross-country field recording journey.An omen they’ve since transformed into a full-blown\, groove-powered spiritual revival. \nTheir debut EP Sunday A.M. (produced by Grammy-winner Eddie Spear) introduced a lineup of heavy hitters with ties to The Band\, Ringo Starr\, and Deer Tick. Their 2023 full-length Kicked Out of the Garden\, recorded across Portland\, Philly\, and Ukraine with producer Cameron Spies\, spent eight weeks on the NACC 200 and landed the band on NPR’s Live Wire Radio and multiple year-end best-of lists. With a sound rooted in 1970s swagger\, Leon Russell-style piano gospel\, Southern rock\, and communal soul\, Family Worship Center brings their own throwback gospel to the people – complete with horns\, harmonies\, and secular salvation. Troy Nelson of KEXP called them “truly the best live band I have seen in years\,” while The Portland Mercury described their show as “taking your ass to church” -and that’s exactly what they intend to do. \nSMOKER DAD“Rock ‘n’ roll\, smoke a bowl.” That’s the motto of Seattle-based 6-piece Smoker Dad\, which gives you an idea of what to expect (if the band name didn’t already). The cover photo of their self-titled debut album shows that they also have a tasteful sense of humor. More importantly though: Trevor Conway (vocals\, guitar)\, Chris King (vocals\, keys)\, Teagen Conway (guitar\, vocals)\, Chris Costalupes (pedal steels\, guitar\, tambourine)\, Derek Luther (bass\, vocals)\, and Adam Knowles (drums) know how to play Southern fried rock music. The ten songs here – nine originals\, one cover (Ron Pederson’s Puget Sound) – are loud\, fast\, raucous and dirty\, as it should be. DESCRIPTION:The Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association \n20th Anniversary Season \nPiano Summit \nGorge Sinfonietta with Kathryn Apland and Mitchell Jett Spencer\, soloists \nThursday and Saturday\, June 18  and 20  at 7 PM\, Sunday June 21 at 2 PM \nWy’east Middle School Performing Arts Center \nOver the past twenty years\, the Gorge Sinfonietta has presented hundreds of concerts featuring a wide spectrum of music\, from beloved classics to exciting new compositions. Two of the most memorable concerts featured Kathryn Apland playing the Grieg Piano Concerto\, and Mitchell Jett Spencer performing Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto. For its final concert of the 2025-26 Season\, the Sinfonietta has invited both soloists to return in a concert called “Piano Summit.” \nConductor Mark Steighner said that the concert’s title has two meanings. “In the world of geopolitics or business\, a summit brings together talented people to share ideas. But of course the other meaning is the apex\, the top of the mountain. This music is the absolute summit of late 19th century Romanticism and piano virtuosity.” \nSteighner said that having two piano concertos on one program is pretty rare\, and something the Sinfonietta has never done. Mitchell Jett Spencer will be performing Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini\, which takes the listener on a complex\, dazzling musical journey that’s filled with romance\, drama and humor. \nKathryn Apland will perform Franz Liszt’s Totentanz\, which is also a theme and variations\, but based on an ancient Gregorian chant melody\, the Dies Irae\, or “Day of Anger.” Totentanz is one of the composer’s most dramatic\, progressive and genuinely surprising works. In many ways it foreshadows later 20th century composers like Bartok.” \nSteighner said\, “I am in awe of both Kathy and Mitch’s technical skills\, their deep musical understanding and their willingness to take on these incredibly difficult challenges. I guarantee audiences will be impressed.” \nThe program will be rounded out by Johannes Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture and an excerpt from Gustav Mahler’s Third Symphony. \n“Mahler is one of my absolute favorite composers\,” Steighner said. “I’ve been listening to his music since I was in high school or before. The Sinfonietta has never played any music by Mahler because it’s too big\, usually requiring an immense orchestra. But I couldn’t step away from the podium without doing at least a little bit.” \nThe Piano Summit concerts will be Steighner’s last performance with the orchestra. He will be retiring after founding CGOA and its ensembles twenty years ago. Steighner’s replacement will be Lars Campbell\, recently hired after an exhaustive search. Campbell is the longtime director of the Clackamas Community College Wind Ensemble and a professional trombonist\, having performed with the Oregon Symphony and Seattle Symphony. \n“Lars will helm the Sinfonietta for an exciting new chapter in its development\,” Steighner said. “I’m pleased he was willing and able to join us.” \nThe recent performances of Roads Not Taken were entirely sold out\, so Steighner urges audiences to buy tickets well in advance. The concerts will be Thursday\, June 18 and Saturday\, June 20 at 7 PM\, and Sunday\, June 21 at 2 PM. Concerts will be at the Wy’east Middle School Performing Arts Center at 3000 Wy’east Rd in Odell. Tickets are available at gorgeorchestra.org. The 17-piece big band will perform a full set of American songbook classics and Latin jazz standards — including Duke Ellington’s Take the A Train and Caravan\, Glenn Miller’s In the Mood\, Chattanooga Choo Choo\, New York\, New York\, Brazil\, Mambo Caliente\, and the Count Basie classic Moten Swing — performed right on the showroom floor surrounded by new Toyotas. \nWhether you come to dance\, listen\, or just soak up the energy\, there’s room for all of it. Come in for a real Sunday Funday! \nGALEN CLARK ORGAN TRIO \nThe Galen Clark Organ Trio brings a genre-bending approach to the classic organ trio instrumentation\, exploring entropic soundscapes\, psychedelic funk and groove heavy electronic tinged jazz. The trio features Peter Knudsen (Mono Neon\, Ghost-note\, greaterkind) on guitar and Casey Anderson (Curtis Salgado) on drums. \nGalen Clark is a keyboardist\, songwriter\, producer\, and educator based in Portland\, OR. He leads the soul funk collective Outer Orbit and the genre bending group Trio Subtonic and he is 1/3 of the NW collaboration Patterns Fly with D’Vonne Lewis and Andy Coe. He has toured and collaborated with artists such as Anna Tivel\, Sarah Clarke\, Sleater-Kinney\, A Love Electric\, Jessica Lurrie\, Nicole McCabe\, Scott Pemberton and more.
