DESCRIPTION:Friday\, September 25th 2026 \n$30 Advance // $35 Day of6pm Doors / 7pm ShowAll Ages \nDEAN JOHNSON \nWith I Hope We Can Still Be Friends\, his debut for Saddle Creek\, Dean Johnson makes a pact with the listener: He will sing you his truth in the most heartfelt and charming way possible\, if you promise to keep an open mind. \nThe title partly stems from the playful way the Seattle-based singer\, songwriter and guitarist communes with his audiences at concerts. “I hope you’re not afraid to talk to me after the show\,” he’ll say\, sweetly\, before launching into “Death of the Party\,” the album’s seventh song. Centered on the “energy vampire” archetype — the exasperating windbag we’ve all encountered at some point — its lyrics are at once intellectually biting and unmistakably hilarious. His tender voice rings out like the ghost of Roy Orbison or a misfit Everly brother. \n“Words don’t come easily to me / I notice you don’t have that problem / It sounds to me you cannot stop them\,” Johnson sings over acoustic guitar strumming\, and gentle bass and drums\, like the narrator in a dark comedy whose coming-of-age misadventures have made for an excellent film. \nJohnson spent years tending bar at Al’s Tavern in Seattle’s Wallingford neighborhood. There\, he encountered folks of all stripes; and regulars enthusiastically murmured about his budding musical greatness — There’s the best songwriter in town! Johnson was a kind of local lore\, a long-held family secret\, before the singer finally broke out in 2023 with his debut album\, Nothing For Me Please\, at age 50. \n“‘Death of the Party’ is a great example of that\,” he says of the sociological experience of bartending. “Being in that environment\, lyrics did solidify. If I was working on a song\, it wasn’t unusual for some new aspect of it\, or a line that was too vague\, to suddenly come into focus.” \nI Hope We Can Still Be Friends is essentially an anthology that bridges Johnson’s earliest days as a songwriter with his present-day outlook and abilities. There are songs that have been in his setlists for years\, and others that will be new to fans. Each of its 11 tracks contains jocular social commentary or lovingly rendered affairs of the heart. The album’s songs about love and relationships offer another way to interpret its title: as a parting thought to an ex. \nLike all of Johnson’s cable-knit writing\, the title is a clever banner for the album’s dual nature\, the thing that binds its tragedy and comedy masks. Johnson explains that he didn’t set out to make a concept album. It’s a coincidence that about half of the album’s songs are a bit sardonic\, and the other half are more lighthearted. The singer playfully refers to the former as his “mean” songs\, which is why the album’s back cover is adorned with a warning that says “Beware of Dean.” \nLike John Prine or Kris Kristofferson’s country-adjacent sound\, devastating humor and economical profundity refracted through a barroom’s haze\, the album is filled with easygoing twang\, sad characters\, universal truths and the absurdity of everyday life. “Carol” recounts the numb consumption and dissipating cultural attention that is besieging America. There’s a search for optimism amid meditations on dying in a plane crash in “Before You Hit the Ground.” Romance that is best forgotten steers “So Much Better” — only Johnson could weave electroconvulsive therapy into a gentle\, chuckle-inducing missive on unbearable heartbreak. \nI Hope We Can Still Be Friends floats in a liminal plane between timely and timeless\, its minimalist instrumentation elevating Johnson’s affecting voice to new heights. Recorded at Unknown Studio in Anacortes\, Washington\, the record was produced by Sera Cahoone — the Seattle-based singer-songwriter Johnson describes as a “soulmate sibling.” Overdubbing took place at Seattle’s Crackle & Pop! \nFor the sessions\, Johnson assembled a small band of friends including Abbey Blackwell (bass\, backing vocals)\, multi-instrumentalist Sam Peterson and Cahoone (drums\, backing vocals)\, who created a familial tone on the already intimate album. I Hope We Can Still Be Friends\, with its sharp observations and stirring personal insights\, holds space for both intense reflection and emotional release. You may laugh\, or cry or both. In this sense\, the album is powerful medicine — a way to both expose yourself to and inoculate yourself against the ugly\, absurd\, existential and heartbreaking. At its core rests a basic truth that is often difficult to remember or accept: Happiness wouldn’t exist without sadness as its counterpart. \nOn his uncanny ability to so clearly see and then encapsulate humanity in all its messy glory\, Johnson offers this core memory\, drawn from his childhood on Camano Island in the Puget Sound. “I was raised on a bluff\,” he says. “I’m not trying to make it sound dramatic\, but I did have a sweeping view.” \nMAMA’S BROKE \nFor more than a decade\, Mama’s Broke\, the Canadian duo of Amy Lou Keeler and Lisa Maria\, have forged a style carried across landscapes rather than tied to one. Their forthcoming 12-song LP Reunion\, out August 28 via Free Dirt Records and Forward Music Group\, follows years in near-constant motion\, bringing their folk-without-borders approach to small clubs\, DIY spaces\, and everywhere in between. Winners of the Canadian Folk Music Award for Ensemble of the Year for their 2017 debut Count the Wicked\, their music is rooted in long days playing for passing crowds and traveling by foot\, as well as in the deep wells of folk lineage they’ve tapped into across Eastern Canada\, Appalachia\, Ireland\, and beyond. Their sound doesn’t belong to any one place so much as it passes through them\, grounded in the traditions that shaped it. \nThat foundation was built long before stages and studio sessions\, in traveling communities where music functioned as both currency and connection. The two met within a global network of musicians funding their way through shared songs\, carrying only what they could as they traded melodies and stories across the miles. Playing for hours at a time on the street demanded a repertoire that could hold attention and sustain emotion\, drawing them deep into traditional material and the discipline of close harmony. Over time\, the songs became a common language\, connecting what came before with the music they were making together. \nBuilding on their JUNO-nominated album Narrow Line (2022)\, Reunion reflects a world coming apart in plain sight\, tracing fractured communities\, the erosion of shared ground\, and the growing awareness that the systems we were taught to trust no longer hold or deliver the promises they were meant to keep. The songs don’t preach or prescribe; they reflect\, holding up a mirror and leaving space for something else to take shape.  \nRecorded just outside Nashville in Goodlettsville\, Tennessee\, Reunion features subtle contributions from bassist Paul Kowert (Gillian Welch & David Rawlings) and others\, adding depth without pulling focus from the record’s acoustic core. We use it like a dam to keep the buildup of our thoughts from spilling out onto others\, though it’s not always clear who we’re protecting – them or us? Nevertheless\, there are worlds behind the wall\, for those who wish to explore. And such is the case for this record. \nIt is painfully unsurprising to say that when the songs for Fine Thanks and You began to emerge\, there was a lot of upheaval in the lives of people in this country and around the world. Meanwhile in my own personal life\, I was moving through a profound loss\, and the realness of this experience was creating some vivid existential sparks that the mind wanted to follow. \nThe sparks I chose to follow were mostly simple reflections about what it’s like to be in a body\, to have agency\, to have space\, and to move through this window of time like a visitor. It was an exploration\, and with every exploration comes imagery: heatwaves waving back at me (Hot Pavement)…sidewalks slipping off into infinity (“City Walkin’”)…painted hills\, sharp like knives\, cutting up the purple sky (“Wild Ride”)…up again\, into the light again\, open my eyes and then I realize I don’t want it to end (“Second Thoughts”). Thematically\, there is searching in these songs\, but never a sense of feeling lost. \nWeirdly\, it was during these times of channeling thoughts into songs that I found myself gravitating to big box stores with no intention of buying anything. This might seem like a non-sequitur\, but these places were a calming backdrop to a mind that hadn’t been untangled yet. Something about the sterility of the big box store—their utter neutrality and aggressive dedication to the bland and basic—were a blank and empty canvas for me to cycle through ideas until a line or a hook\, or even a whole song came out. I walked through their aisles for a long stretch of months\, my thoughts only interrupted by the kind inquiries of the stores’ employees. “Can I help you find anything?” I want to find a state of mind I haven’t been in (“Inspiration”). “What is it you’re looking for?” I don’t know what I want\, all I know is that I want it to be real and I wanna feel amazing (“Feel Amazing”). “How are you doing today?” Fine thanks and you. \nThose necessary\, life-giving connections extended into the recording process. I was working at that time close to Trash Treasury\, a studio where Cameron Spies (Radiation City\, Night Heron) records and produces. We would cross paths regularly and talk about anything and everything\, including music. The more we shared our ideas\, and the more time I spent listening to the records he’d worked on\, the more I knew he was the right person to help us construct the sonic umbrella we all wanted to huddle under. \nWe recorded mostly at Trash Treasury and partly at our own studio\, Friendly Ghost. In either case\, the studio was like a friendly shelter for all of us (myself on guitar and vocals\, Rob \nOberdorfer on bass\, and Evan Railton on drums) to have fun\, try things\, and be freaks. But through the second phase of recording\, an additional connection was made that helped Fine Thanks and You reach its completed shape. I met Mira Stanley during a co-write we did over Zoom and was immediately in awe of her voice. We were initially working on our own separate material\, but I asked if she would lend her vocals to this new Ages and Ages record. To my delight\, she drove all the way from Nashville to make it happen. She fit into the fold so well that she has since relocated to Portland and is now a full-fledged member of the band. \nFrom those first sparks of inspiration to the finished album\, I found myself returning to a poem Dr. Clarisa Pinkola Estes\, the Mexican-American writer best known for the book Women Who Run With the Wolves. The full poem is worth seeking out\, but these lines in particular resonated with me deeply. \nOne of the most calming and powerful actions you can do to intervene in a stormy world is to stand up and show your soul. Soul on deck shines like gold in dark times. The light of the soul throws sparks\, can send up flares\, builds signal fires\, causes proper matters to catch fire. To display the lantern of soul in shadowy times like these – to be fierce and to show mercy toward others; both are acts of immense bravery and greatest necessity. Struggling souls catch light from other souls who are fully lit and willing to show it. If you would help to calm the tumult\, this is one of the strongest things you can do. \nThe impact of this poem is most plainly reflected in the artwork for the album that Mira and I put together\, but those sparks and the heat of the flames Dr. Estes talks about are hopefully going to be seen and felt throughout each of these songs. The kinds of brief or lingering lights that will help draw us all closer to one another and allow us to make those necessary connections\, be they soul deep and permanent (We could find some light and plant a perfect garden\, cultivate ideas\, watch their petals open\, “Inspiration”) or brief and familiar. Fine thanks and you.

DESCRIPTION:TICKETS RELEASE FRIDAY JUNE 12 at 10AM PST! \nSunday\, October 18th\, 2026 \n$28 Advance // $33 Day of5pm Doors / 6pm ShowAll Ages \nJOHN MORELAND \nAfter an impressive 2010s run of albums that earned him a devoted fanbase\, accolades from outlets like The New York Times\, Fresh Air\, and Pitchfork\, and a place in the upper echelon of modern Americana singer-songwriters\, John Moreland has already taken two unexpected turns this decade\, both of which highlight his fierce artistic independence. First\, he released a brilliant and sonically layered folk-electronica meditation on modern alienation\, 2022’s Birds In The Ceiling\, that took some of his fans by surprise. Then\, after wrapping up a difficult tour behind that record in November 2022\, he stopped working entirely. He took an entire year off from playing shows and didn’t use a smartphone for 6 months. “At the end of that year\, I was just like ‘Nobody call me’. I needed to not do anything for a while and just process\,” Moreland says. After nearly a decade in the limelight\, constantly jostled by the expectations of his audience\, the music industry\, and anonymous strangers online\, he carved out some time to rest\, heal\, and reflect for the first time. \nThe result of that unplugged year at home is 2024’s Visitor\, a folk-rock record that is intimate\, immediate\, deeply thoughtful\, and catchy as hell. Moreland recorded the album at his home in Bixby\, Oklahoma\, in only ten days\, playing nearly every instrument himself (his wife Pearl Rachinsky sang on one song\, and his longtime collaborator John Calvin Abney contributed a guitar solo)\, as well as engineering and mixing the album. “Simplicity and immediacy felt very important to the process\,” he says. \nThis is a return to the approach Moreland took on his breakthrough albums\, 2013’s In The Throes and 2015’s High On Tulsa Heat\, both of which were largely self-recorded at home with a small cadre of additional musicians. Echoes of these early albums can be heard on Visitor (Moreland makes a passing reference to In The Throes’ opening track “I Need You To Tell Me Who I Am” in two different songs on Visitor)\, which finds Moreland shutting out the noisy world outside\, and the even noisier digital world in his pocket\, to reconnect with a muse that’s had to increasingly compete for his attention in the intervening years. Visitor charts his journey back to this muse. If Birds In The Ceiling’s theme was alienation\, Visitor’s theme is un-alienation. \nMoreland begins the album where he began his year-long process of healing: doomscrolling past images of political turmoil\, war\, and environmental destruction\, in a trio of surprisingly hooky folk songs that address present-day social realities more directly than any previous John Moreland songs. On opening track “The Future Is Coming Fast”\, Moreland describes the perpetually logged-on life in a time of rolling catastrophe over gentle fingerpicking: “The news keeps steady coming in / Our condition shows its teeth again / A nightmare we all thought would end.” \nIn the bridge of that song\, Moreland lands on a key couplet that captures the personal toll of living inside a perpetual cycle of digital bleakness\, while also hinting at a way out: “But we don’t grieve\, and we don’t rest / We just choose the lie that feels the best.” In order to cope with our digitally mediated lives\, where we constantly bear witness to ongoing disasters while feeling powerless to do anything about them\, we must walk around in a persistent state of denial. We repress feelings and lie to ourselves continuously. This status quo is\, of course\, antithetical to the conditions that produce transcendent works of art. For an artist with ambitions like Moreland’s\, this is a big problem. \nAn infinite feed filled with bad news isn’t the only thing that’s been keeping Moreland from processing his emotions. Ironically\, a busy career as a touring musician can prevent you from doing the deep self-reflection so necessary to the creative process just as much as a smartphone can. On “No Time”\, Moreland sings “Now it’s all a blur / They told you who you were\,” followed by the chorus line\, “I don’t have the time to cry”. In the bridge of “Will The Heavens Catch Us?”\, Moreland describes how painful it can feel to focus exclusively on chasing success – often by following rules set down by others – without taking the time to process one’s emotions\, reflect\, and heal: “We writhe in agony / For our precious little legacy”. No wonder Moreland needed a break. \nSo what’s Moreland’s solution to this impasse? The first step is the same one that Henry David Thoreau posed in Walden\, another work about an artist intentionally isolating with the purpose of pursuing a deeper truth: “Simplify\, simplify\, simplify”. No shows for a whole year. No smartphone. No studio time. No additional musicians. Strip things away and let inspiration emerge. On a musical level\, the result is a raw\, straightforward sound. Moreland leaves a lot of space in these songs. To hammer home the folk immediacy\, he includes some new-for-him instrumentation\, most prominently on two haunting instrumental interludes that he tracked live with a field recorder during late-night country drives. (Who knew that\, on top of everything else\, Moreland plays the mandolin and fiddle?) The result is that\, when Moreland sings “The more you say\, the less it means” on the track of that title\, it has the feeling of being a sort of personal mantra. \nBy doing all of that simplifying\, Moreland creates space to invite the muse back in – a process that he narrates in a pair of gorgeous invocations that kick off Side Two of the album\, “Blue Dream Carolina” and “Silver Sliver” (the latter of which was also tracked live with a field recorder). He begins the side with what is perhaps the record’s most poignant verse: \nBlue dream Carolina\, remind me why I do thisTell me what the truth is\, don’t tell me who to beI don’t have to tell you this life is plenty painfulHere comes my fallen angel\, falling down on me \nBy the end of this verse\, his muse\, his “fallen angel”\, has returned to him\, now a little worse for the wear. And by the end of the album\, Moreland even seems to have resolved some of the internal struggles that led to his year off the road\, as is revealed in a fiery couplet that signals his recommitment to a relentless pursuit of the truth: “I will not be your puppet or your payment / Your easy entertainment\, for I’ve made amends to me.” Moreland has grieved and rested and come out on the other side with a new world-weariness and hard-won wisdom. \nBut there is another path he could have taken. On his Petty-esque ode to despair “One Man Holds The World Hostage”\, Moreland cleverly leaves the identity of the “one man” in question open. He could be one of any number of the men currently endangering humanity\, whether it’s a world leader with access to nuclear weapons\, an oil CEO pursuing ever-greater profits in spite of the threat posed by climate change\, or just an average Joe with hate in his heart. But all of these “one men” have something in common. As Moreland sings\, “One man holds the world hostage ‘cause he’s afraid of his feelings”. This is the line that unifies the album’s social commentary with the personal journey that Moreland describes. The denial and avoidance that most of us rely on to cope with the relentless speed and noise of modern life are\, if allowed to fester\, also the source of our greatest dangers. If we don’t work through our shit\, Moreland suggests\, we all have the potential to turn to the dark side. Moreland’s narration of his journey back to his muse is more than a simple anecdote\, then. The steps that he took – simplify your life\, then listen to that deep and quiet voice inside of you long and hard – form a road map for all of us toward some sort of healing\, not just for ourselves individually\, but potentially for society as a whole. \nJohn Moreland is known for writing lines that hit you in the gut\, but many of the best moments on Visitor are more subtle. The significance of one of the record’s best lines\, from “The More You Say\, The Less It Means\,” may take multiple listens to fully sink in: “Some folks say and some folks know”. This line sums up John Moreland’s worldview very neatly. It lays out the dichotomy of truth and lies that Moreland has spent his entire career examining\, but now more elegantly than ever. On the one hand\, there are people who constantly talk (or sing\, or write\, or post online) without deep thought or reflection – often irresponsibly\, even dangerously\, and for personal gain. These are the “weary worn-out fools” and “famous false prophets” he lambasted on In The Throes\, or the subject of “One Man Holds The World Hostage” on Visitor. And on the other hand\, there are folks who know – those who commit themselves to the pursuit of truth and wisdom\, and who only say things when they fully know them to be true. In Moreland’s book\, the artist’s true calling is to be one of the latter – the “folks who know”. While John Moreland has already earned a spot in the pantheon of the great singer-songwriters of his generation\, Visitor confirms his place in that much loftier Hall Of Fame. \nGEORGIA MAQ \nGeorgia Maq became something of a local hero as the leader of revered punk trio Camp Cope\, calling out music industry sexism over fearsome indie rock salvos while garnering widespread international acclaim. In late 2019\, Maq surprised everyone by releasing her solo debut\, Pleaser\, a refreshingly bright and catchy missive of electro-pop tunes about heartbreak and love. A suite of singles in ‘Someone Stranger’ with Alice Ivy\, ‘Joe Rogan’\, ‘tropical lush ice’ and live EP recorded at the Sydney Opera House showcase the breadth of her taste and range. \nEver since\, Georgia has chased a more genuine form of pop music in her solo career\, a vision hat retains all of the glamour and universality but feels unburdened from capitalist underpinnings. Mining the evergreen themes of romantic\, sexual and self-love\, Georgia Maq’s solo venture was not so much a transformation as it was a revelation. Opening up on her vulnerabilities and heartbreaks\, her continued evolution is far beyond the Greek girl from Naarm that first set fire to the rain.
