While rooting their sound in Ethio-Jazz\, Tezeta Band (Pronounced Tih-Zeh-Tah Band) has been playing old-school African grooves across dance floors and festivals to popular acclaim since 2008 \nTezeta Band was formed in Portland\, OR by former members of legendary 90s Hip-Hop band\, Five Fingers of Funk. After the Fingers dissolved in the early 2000s\, members Ted Hille and Tim Cook discovered a cassette of music from the French compilation\, Ethiopiques and decided to start a new group with their former bandmates. The band\, which started as a tribute to Golden age Ethiopian soul music\, has evolved to now play an inspired mix of both classic and original Ethio-Jazz compositions. \nTezeta Band have had the distinct honor to open for such legends as\, Mahmoud Ahmed\, Aster Aweke\, Hugh Masekela\, Toots & the Maytals and Vieux Farke Toure. In 2016 Tezeta Band self-released a full length LP “The Origin of Night life” and their music has been featured on internationally known compilations\, Noise and Chill Out: Ethiopian Groove Worldwide and Beyond Addis 1 & 2. Tezeta Band has also had their music featured in Songlines Magazine and on award winning documentary “Zemene. It is a uniquely hopeful experience of soul and body. \nThe film accompanies the book of the same name\, a poetic photo essay that unfolds in full color\, one line on each page. \n— \nNick Jaina was an Oregon Book Award finalist in 2015 for his memoir Get It While You Can\, which is now in its third printing. His writing has appeared in Atlantic Monthly\, McSweeney’s Quarterly and the journal Oregon Humanities. He has released many wonderful albums under his own name\, including 2025’s The Monster Mash. He co-founded and was music director for a ballet company in New York City called Satellite that involved dancers from Juilliard and the New York City Ballet and performed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music\, garnering praise from The New York Times.
