SUMMARY:Piano Summit presented by The CGOA
DESCRIPTION:The Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association \n20th Anniversary Season \nPiano Summit \nGorge Sinfonietta with Kathryn Apland and Mitchell Jett Spencer\, soloists \nThursday and Saturday\, June 18  and 20  at 7 PM\, Sunday June 21 at 2 PM \nWy’east Middle School Performing Arts Center \nOver the past twenty years\, the Gorge Sinfonietta has presented hundreds of concerts featuring a wide spectrum of music\, from beloved classics to exciting new compositions. Two of the most memorable concerts featured Kathryn Apland playing the Grieg Piano Concerto\, and Mitchell Jett Spencer performing Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto. For its final concert of the 2025-26 Season\, the Sinfonietta has invited both soloists to return in a concert called “Piano Summit.” \nConductor Mark Steighner said that the concert’s title has two meanings. “In the world of geopolitics or business\, a summit brings together talented people to share ideas. But of course the other meaning is the apex\, the top of the mountain. This music is the absolute summit of late 19th century Romanticism and piano virtuosity.” \nSteighner said that having two piano concertos on one program is pretty rare\, and something the Sinfonietta has never done. Mitchell Jett Spencer will be performing Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini\, which takes the listener on a complex\, dazzling musical journey that’s filled with romance\, drama and humor. \nKathryn Apland will perform Franz Liszt’s Totentanz\, which is also a theme and variations\, but based on an ancient Gregorian chant melody\, the Dies Irae\, or “Day of Anger.” Totentanz is one of the composer’s most dramatic\, progressive and genuinely surprising works. In many ways it foreshadows later 20th century composers like Bartok.” \nSteighner said\, “I am in awe of both Kathy and Mitch’s technical skills\, their deep musical understanding and their willingness to take on these incredibly difficult challenges. I guarantee audiences will be impressed.” \nThe program will be rounded out by Johannes Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture and an excerpt from Gustav Mahler’s Third Symphony. \n“Mahler is one of my absolute favorite composers\,” Steighner said. “I’ve been listening to his music since I was in high school or before. The Sinfonietta has never played any music by Mahler because it’s too big\, usually requiring an immense orchestra. But I couldn’t step away from the podium without doing at least a little bit.” \nThe Piano Summit concerts will be Steighner’s last performance with the orchestra. He will be retiring after founding CGOA and its ensembles twenty years ago. Steighner’s replacement will be Lars Campbell\, recently hired after an exhaustive search. Campbell is the longtime director of the Clackamas Community College Wind Ensemble and a professional trombonist\, having performed with the Oregon Symphony and Seattle Symphony. \n“Lars will helm the Sinfonietta for an exciting new chapter in its development\,” Steighner said. “I’m pleased he was willing and able to join us.” \nThe recent performances of Roads Not Taken were entirely sold out\, so Steighner urges audiences to buy tickets well in advance. The concerts will be Thursday\, June 18 and Saturday\, June 20 at 7 PM\, and Sunday\, June 21 at 2 PM. Concerts will be at the Wy’east Middle School Performing Arts Center at 3000 Wy’east Rd in Odell. Tickets are available at gorgeorchestra.org. Adults $25; CGOA members $20; students/youth FREE (HS & college students show ID at the door). Also\, $5 tickets are available at the door for SNAP card holders through the Arts for All program. \nThe Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and presenting musical performances of the highest quality in the Columbia River Gorge region. With a commitment to artistic excellence and education\, CGOA brings the joy of music to audiences of all ages.

SUMMARY:BARN BURNER: Family Worship Center / Smoker Dad at Trout Lake Hall
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, June 19th\, 2026 \n$15 Advance // $20 Day Of Show6pm Doors / 7pm ShowAll Ages \nBARN BURNER shows are all about the dancing! No matter who might be on the stage\, you are guaranteed to groove. \nFAMILY WORSHIP CENTERFamily Worship Center is a rock-and-soul commune born in Nashville\, Tennessee and reborn in Portland\, Oregon. Fronted by visionary songwriter and keyboardist Andy Krissberg\, the group draws its name from a strange\, cult-leaning text unearthed during a cross-country field recording journey. An omen they’ve since transformed into a full-blown\, groove-powered spiritual revival. \nTheir debut EP Sunday A.M. (produced by Grammy-winner Eddie Spear) introduced a lineup of heavy hitters with ties to The Band\, Ringo Starr\, and Deer Tick. Their 2023 full-length Kicked Out of the Garden\, recorded across Portland\, Philly\, and Ukraine with producer Cameron Spies\, spent eight weeks on the NACC 200 and landed the band on NPR’s Live Wire Radio and multiple year-end best-of lists. With a sound rooted in 1970s swagger\, Leon Russell-style piano gospel\, Southern rock\, and communal soul\, Family Worship Center brings their own throwback gospel to the people – complete with horns\, harmonies\, and secular salvation. Troy Nelson of KEXP called them “truly the best live band I have seen in years\,” while The Portland Mercury described their show as “taking your ass to church” -and that’s exactly what they intend to do. \nSMOKER DAD“Rock ‘n’ roll\, smoke a bowl.” That’s the motto of Seattle-based 6-piece Smoker Dad\, which gives you an idea of what to expect (if the band name didn’t already). The cover photo of their self-titled debut album shows that they also have a tasteful sense of humor. More importantly though: Trevor Conway (vocals\, guitar)\, Chris King (vocals\, keys)\, Teagen Conway (guitar\, vocals)\, Chris Costalupes (pedal steels\, guitar\, tambourine)\, Derek Luther (bass\, vocals)\, and Adam Knowles (drums) know how to play Southern fried rock music. The ten songs here – nine originals\, one cover (Ron Pederson’s Puget Sound) – are loud\, fast\, raucous and dirty\, as it should be. Smoker Dad rocks hard\, but always with a sense of melody – swinging guitar riffs and powerful vocals – that will make you dance like crazy. – Dennis Add to Wantlist

SUMMARY:Ellis Bullard at Trout Lake Hall
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, June 21st\, 2026 \n$20 Advance // $25 Day Of Show5pm Doors / 6pm ShowAll Ages \nELLIS BULLARD \nIn the wake of 2024’s Honky Tonk Ain’t Noise Pollution\, Ellis Bullard has left no doubt that country music is still yearning for the true-blue honky-tonk experience he brings to the stage and studio. Listen to Bullard\, and you’re listening to a life of barnstorming\, hard living\, and layers of musical influences. \n“I’m just a person\, just a guy out there having a good time and trying to make sure other people are too\,” Bullard says. “I give my time to people\, and I think that means a lot to them. I’m genuinely trying to forge relationships and have meaningful interactions with all the fans I meet on the road.” \nAfter sharing the stage with Texas mainstays like Shinyribs\, Reckless Kelly\, Randy Rogers and Cody Jinks\, Bullard has come into his own\, and these days finds himself headlining clubs and dance halls from coast to coast. For his part\, Bullard knows he’s on to something\, and he’s enjoying the ride.

SUMMARY:Never Come Down at Trout Lake Hall
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 27th\, 2026 \n$25 Advance // $30 Day Of Show5pm Doors / 6pm ShowAll Ages \nNEVER COME DOWN \nFormed in 2017\, Never Come Down was born from the vibrant if not occasionally overlooked music scene of Portland\, Oregon. Much like the city that inspired them\, they’re a smart\, charming\, off-beat amalgam of varied backgrounds and tastes. In today’s paradoxical world where honoring tradition is often pitted against exploration and innovation\, the band confidently walks the line between the modern and the tried-and-true. They’ve gained a loyal following and continue to win over audiences everywhere from Reykjavik’s Iceland Airwaves to San Francisco’s acclaimed Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. They’ve gained the attention of industry veterans\, and toured in support of notable acts such as Yonder Mountain String Band and The Travelin’ McCourys\, among others. Never Come Down’s live performance never disappoints- with showmanship\, originality\, songwriting and musical prowess far beyond their years.

DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, June 30th\, 2026 \n$25 Advance // $30 Day Of Show6pm Doors / 7pm ShowAll Ages \nMOUNTAIN GRASS UNIT \nHailing from Birmingham\, Alabama\, Mountain Grass Unit has rapidly emerged as one of the most electrifying young bands in modern bluegrass\, fusing razor-sharp picking\, fearless improvisation\, and four-part harmony into a sound that feels both rooted and revolutionary. The quartet — Drury Anderson (mandolin\, vocals)\, Luke Black (guitar\, vocals)\, Josiah Nelson (fiddle\, vocals)\, and Sam Wilson (bass\, vocals) — first turned heads with their 2024 EP Runnin’ From Trouble\, but 2025 proved to be their true breakthrough year. The band logged nearly 100 national tour dates\, sold out over thirty headline shows\, and delivered standout festival performances at Telluride Bluegrass\, DelFest\, Northlands\, an d WinterWonderGrass. \nRolling Stone praised them as the “surprise show” of Telluride\, while Saving Country Music declared them the “next big band in bluegrass\,” with further national spotlight through exclusive live sessions with Paste\, Relix\, and No Depression\, cementing their arrival on the national stage. Their momentum peaked during IBMA week\, where they earned the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Momentum Artist of the Year award\, a defining milestone in a year of exponential growth. \nNow in the studio crafting their next full-length album\, due late summer\, and fresh off support runs with genre leaders like The Infamous Stringdusters and Kitchen Dwellers\, the band continues to expand its reach. Along the way\, they’ve shared stages with legends like Billy Strings and Greensky Bluegrass in a series of high-profile moments that underscore the respect they’ve earned from the genre’s leading voices. Mountain Grass Unit isn’t simply riding bluegrass’s current resurgence\, they are helping steer it\, staking their claim as one of the most vital and forward-looking young bands in American roots music today.
