Every moment that happens to me\, I just have this sense of ease once I get to the top.” That sense of relief–the feeling of completing a tough journey—animates the six relaxed and meditative songs here. While half of the tracks are pastoral ambient instrumentals and half are plainspoken lyrical numbers with ample twang and groove\, each captures Silverstein’s striking comfort with his voice\, his process\, and his role as a bandleader. To him\, these songs feel like home. It’s New Age for the everyman: more cosmic than country and more accessible than esoteric. This is what cosmic country sounds like in 2024.  \nThis EP picks up where his artistic breakthrough and 2023 full-length Western Sky Music left off. A reinvention for Silverstein that traded homespun solo recordings for an expansive full-band sound\, the LP was acclaimed by outlets like Aquarium Drunkard and The Portland Mercury\, who praised its\, “cosmic country and shimmering Americana that feels like a significant step forward from his previous work.” On Roseway\, he reunites with his Western Sky Music rhythm section in drummer Dana Buoy (Akron/Family) and bassist Alex Chapman and enlists pedal steel player Connor Gallaher (Anna St. Louis\, Lana Del Rey) to flesh out the songs. “I always view EPs as moments to try things and experiment\,” says Silverstein. “Building this trust and communication with Alex and Dana has made for a wonderful partnership and helped me take risks I normally wouldn’t.”  \nRecorded with Ryan Oxford (Y La Bamba\, Rose City Band)\, Roseway boasts an eclectic and exploratory palate. Songs like the inviting and laid-back “Gassed Up” find Silverstein adding country-funk grooves over inviting\, spaced-out lyrics. Atop a buoyant bass line from Chapman\, Silverstein sings\, “You’re gassed up / You gotta go / You’re not lonely / You’re just Alone.” It recalls JJ Cale at his swampiest. “I’m always thinking about how you can incorporate more of a boogie and groove with the twang\,” says Silverstein. Even at its twangiest\, Roseway never feels like a throwback or a retread. Instead\, it pushes these signifiers into headier territory. Take the instrumental “Headcleaner\,” which takes on a krautrock-inspired haze. Elsewhere\, single “Cog In the Wheel” takes on a nomadic search for good vibes. He sings\, “I’ve been cruisin’ / such a long time / Never want to settle down.” That track is a balm that feels like getting closer to a destination.  \nThe vinyl version of Roseway features a b-side that includes the first pressing of Silverstein’s 2021 EP Torii Gates. “That kind of makes this a split release with myself\,” he jokes. The pairing is intentional and important\, however. Also recorded with Oxford and featured Chapman on bass\, that release found Silverstein beginning to branch out from solo fare to a full band. Here\, much of the material is anchored by a drum machine: It was an exercise in appreciating small moments and being comfortable with transitional periods. While the songs are cozy\, hypnotic\, and compelling\, there’s a tension in how they feel like the starting point to a reinvention. On highlight “Soft Lens\,” he sings\,“Stuck outside the Torii Gates / tired of hearing you have to wait.” When he wrote that song\, that gate was a metaphor for his own musical journey.  \nTaken together\, these two EPs feel like a bridge to each other: a document of an artist cresting the hill of his process and vision. It’s a record of contemplation and comfort\, not of prescription and platitudes. Roseway opens with the raw and ramshackle “Countryside\,” which finds Silverstein singing\, “If there’s a gate / I’m passing through / If there’s a light / It’s shining blue.” The line is both the North Star of Roseway and a testament to how far Silverstein has come threading disparate worlds and finding his voice. “I’ve learned to be cool with things not working and failing and loving all of that\,” he says. “It’s all about accepting that part of the process. DESCRIPTION:The Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association 20th Anniversary Season \nRoads Not Taken \nGorge Sinfonietta and the Voci Community Choir \nFriday and Saturday\, April 17 and 18 at 7 PM\, Sunday April 19 at 2 PM \nWy’east Middle School Performing Arts Center \nCombined performances by the Gorge Sinfonietta and the Voci Community choir are always an event! On April 17\,18 and 19\, the two ensembles will come together for a performance called “Roads Not Taken.” \nThe title comes from a line by Robert Frost\, whose poetry is featured in Frostiana\, a beloved setting of Frost’s poems for choir and orchestra. The 75-voice Voci Choir will be accompanied by a chamber orchestra and conducted by Voci director Dan Kenealy. Composed by Randall Thompson in 1959\, the composer’s simple and appealing music reflects Frost’s plain but profound choice of words. \nThe concert also includes Johannes Brahms’ beloved Academic Festival Overture\, performed by the Gorge Sinfonietta and directed by retiring conductor Mark Steighner. The Academic Festival Overture is one of Brahms’ most lively and tuneful works\, and is partly a tongue-in-cheek setting of several well-known\, 19th century university songs. \nThe finale of the Roads Not Taken concert is the premiere of “Requiem in Five Stages” by Mark Steighner and Dennis Castañares. This work combines Latin texts from the traditional Requiem with original poetry and lyrics. Dennis Castañares – known locally as Alonzo Garbanzo – will play the musical role of a Balladeer\, singing the Requiem’s more pop/folk style songs for which he wrote the music. Steighner and Castanares have previously collaborated on over two dozen songs\, most of which are available on Alonzo Garbanzo’s YouTube channel. \nConcerts are Friday and Saturday\, April 17 and 18 at 7 PM\, and Sunday\, April 19 at 2 PM.  All three performances are at the Performing Arts Center at Wy’east Middle School\, 3000 Wyeast Road\, Hood River (Odell).  Tickets are on sale now at gorgeorchestra.org.  Adults $25; CGOA members $20; students/youth FREE (HS & college students show ID at the door). Also\, $5 tickets are available at the door for SNAP card holders through the Arts for All program. \nThe Gorge Sinfonietta will conclude its season on June 18\, 20 and 21 with a performance titled “Piano Summit.” The concert includes two virtuoso works for piano\, Franz Liszt’s Totentanz and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme by Pagannini. Soloists for the concert will be Kathryn Apland and Mitchell Jett Spencer. The concerts will also mark the end of CGOA’s founder and conductor Mark Steighner’s 20-year tenure with the orchestra. In 2014 Ural met drummer/bandleader Scott Magee at a Sunday jam session he’d been hosting for decades and Ural Thomas and The Pain was born. The full showband set to work\, prolifically gigging\, touring the world\, and releasing four critically acclaimed records (two LPs and two singles) between 2015 and 2018. Despite the usual COVID-19 obstacles\, The Pain finally completed their much-anticipated third album in 2021.\nWhile “Dancing Dimensions” explores everything from sweet Chicago soul to airy West Coast psychedelia to Sly funk\, their latest collection retains the distinctive sound this well-oiled tightly-knit musical aggregation organically developed over years of relentless work. Composed by Randall Thompson in 1959\, the composer’s simple and appealing music reflects Frost’s plain but profound choice of words. \nThe concert also includes Johannes Brahms’ beloved Academic Festival Overture\, performed by the Gorge Sinfonietta and directed by retiring conductor Mark Steighner. The Academic Festival Overture is one of Brahms’ most lively and tuneful works\, and is partly a tongue-in-cheek setting of several well-known\, 19th century university songs. \nThe finale of the Roads Not Taken concert is the premiere of “Requiem in Five Stages” by Mark Steighner and Dennis Castañares. This work combines Latin texts from the traditional Requiem with original poetry and lyrics. Dennis Castañares – known locally as Alonzo Garbanzo – will play the musical role of a Balladeer\, singing the Requiem’s more pop/folk style songs for which he wrote the music. After months of site visits\, coordination\, and discussion beginning in October\, the Chamber and City worked together to evaluate space availability\, access\, power\, water\, vendor logistics\, and public safety before finalizing a revised plan. \nWhat’s Changing in 2026 \n\nThe carnival footprint has been revised and relocated to Lewis & Clark Festival Park (Union & W 1st Street).\n The carnival has been curtailed in size to fit the available footprint and will operate:\n\n\nFriday: 4:00–10:00 PM\nSaturday: 11:00 AM–10:00 PM\nSunday: 11:00 AM–6:00 PM\n\n\nVendor Market activities will take place Saturday only (11:00 AM–8:00 PM)\, reducing multi-day street closures.\n• Several festival elements have been redistributed throughout downtown to minimize concentrated impacts.\n\nLewis & Clark Festival Park will be closed for carnival setup beginning Sunday\, April 19\, with full removal and reopening expected by Tuesday\, April 28. \nSaturday\, April 25: A City-Wide Celebration \nSaturday remains the heart of the festival\, featuring: \n\n    CGCC Cherry Fun Run\n• Royalty Coronation & Community Breakfast\n• Cherry Festival Parade (10:00 AM)\n• Open-Air Vendor Market on Federal Street & Tony’s Lot\n• KODL Classic Car Show (Federal Street\, 2nd–4th)\n• Community Fair (4th & Washington–Federal)\n• Children’s Fair (Medical Arts Building Parking Lot)\n• Cherry Festival Quilt Show\n• Randy Haines Cherry Stomp Dance & Evening Concert at Civic Auditorium\n\nStreet closures for the Car Show\, Community Fair\, Children’s Fair\, and Vendor Market will occur Saturday only\, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM\, significantly reducing previous multi-day impacts. \nAll Month Long: The GREAT Cherry Adventure \nIn addition to weekend festivities\, April will feature a month-long Cherry Hunt (April 1–30)\, a community-wide interactive experience modeled after the popular Frosty Trail. Fruition is proof that there’s strength in numbers. \nHow To Make Mistakes\, the band’s first studio album in four years\, showcases a reinvigorated group at the peak of its powers. This is American roots music at its broadest and boldest — a melting pot of rock\, soul\, folk\, and pop. What began as a busking string band has evolved into something more eclectic\, rooted not only in the unique delivery of three different singers\, but also the cohesion of five friends who prefer their music to be homegrown and honest… mistakes and all. \n“This is the first studio album that we’ve recorded entirely live\,” says Jay Cobb Anderson\, who shares frontperson duties with fellow multi-instrumentalists Mimi Naja and Kellen Asebroek. “We recorded 17 songs in 7 days\, with everybody playing together in real time\, and we didn’t overdub anything. The songs sound honest and real. They sound like us.” \nCo-produced by the bandmates themselves\, How To Make Mistakes restores the momentum that Fruition nearly lost in 2020\, back when Covid-19 forced them off the road and into quarantine. At the time\, they’d been playing some of the biggest shows of their lives\, crisscrossing the country in support of their most recent release\, Broken At The Break Of Day. The album’s lead single\, “Dawn\,” had even become a hit on Americana radio. Years of relentless work had taken a toll on Fruition’s mental health\, though\, and cracks were starting to show in the band’s foundation. “We were so deep into the tour hustle that a lot of our cohesive vision might’ve gotten lost\,” Naja admits. “Like anybody in any work force\, we’d all learned to put our heads down and keep moving forward\, even if that wasn’t the best thing for us.” \nWhen they reunited one year later for a long-overdue band practice\, they took stock of everything that had changed during those 12 months apart. Some members had started families. Others had gotten sober. All of them had made the conscious decision to return to music. Fruition funneled that growth and maturity back into their new songs\, which doubled as rallying cries for a band eager to chase down success once again. “We all had the time to ask ourselves some big questions like ‘Do we want to keep doing this?'” Naja adds. “The fact that we reunited in such a reinforced way after all that time apart… I think it says a lot about who this band truly is.” \nAnd who\, exactly\, is Fruition? On songs like “Lonely Work\,” they’re a folk-rock band powered by pedal steel and lovely\, loping tempos. On “Scars\,” they’re a group caught halfway between the earthy textures of Americana and the spacey sweep of something far more ethereal. On “Get Lost\,” they’re a group of adventure seekers looking to leave the big city behind\, stacking their electric guitars into harmonized solos along the way. Fruition’s acoustic roots are evident throughout How To Make Mistakes\, too\, from “Can You Tell Me” — a rough ‘n’ rowdy folk song laced with resonator guitar\, mandolin\, and upright bass — to the campfire ballad “Never Change.” How To Make Mistakes embraces the full spread of the band’s past and present\, mixing unplugged instruments with electrified arrangements\, creating a sound suitable for arenas one minute and front-porch picking parties the next. It’s the widest net Fruition has ever cast\, and it’s also the truest representation of the band’s wide\, all-encompassing sound. \n“When I think about this record\, the word that comes to mind is ‘trust\,'” says Asebroek. “We trust each other. We trust the strength of our songs. We’ve come to really know ourselves as individuals and as partners\, and instead of trying to prove something to the outside world\, we’re trying to show the world that we are who we are\, and we love ourselves.” \nWhen Fruition formed in Portland in 2008\, the band’s three songwriters earned their first fans by busking together on Oregon’s street corners. Those informal gigs were raw and real\, filled with all the honest imperfections of a live performance. Hundreds of shows later\, How To Make Mistakes revisits that flaws-and-all approach\, using it as the foundation for the most definitive album of the band’s career. Tracked live at eTown Hall’s recording studio in Colorado and engineered/mixed by the band’s own drummer\, Tyler Thompson\, it’s an album that embraces not only the in-the-moment immediacy of a live band\, but also the love\, longing\, loss\, and sheer life lived during the band’s 15+ years together. \n“If you listen closely\,” Anderson points out\, “you can hear tempos fluctuate. Maybe you’ll have somebody finger-picking slightly out of time. But that’s part of the whole idea of learning to embrace your true identity.
