This year’s concert will be Sunday\, January 25\, at 2 PM in the Sanctuary of Hood River Valley Christian Church\, 975 Indian Creek Rd\, Hood River. The program is still being finalized\, but as always\, it’s guaranteed to be delightfully eclectic and entertaining. DESCRIPTION:Join Marcella Kriebel local watercolorist and illustrator in an evening of painting tropical plants.  Marcella will cover the basics of watercolor and share her approach to creating a simple watercolor composition.  Starting with a blank piece of watercolor paper\, Marcella will implement a series of her favorite techniques that build dimension and depth in paintings\, using houseplants as the subject matter.  This class is designed for everyone\, beginning painters to more advanced. \nParticipants are welcome to bring their own tropical houseplants to class as actual plant as subjects\, or paint the ones we will have in class. She has two albums available for streaming\, produced by the darlings at Blonde Medicine Records; Magpie and Rocky Mountain Bi. \nShe has opened for some of the best comics ever like Kyle Kinane\, Dave Hill\, Natasha Leggero\, Moshe Kasher\, Russell Peters\, and Janeane Garafalo. They can be deadly\, but the deep roots of volcanoes also provide a foundry for critical minerals that enable modern society. In these ways and others\, volcanoes have inspired scientists and artists alike for thousands of years. The Volcano Listening Project explores connections between scientific research and artistic perspectives of volcanoes\, developing tools to represent data through sound that draw equally from data science\, volcanology\, and new music. ‘Sonification’\, the display of data using sound\, provides a powerful way to understand complex signals such as are emerging with new monitoring capabilities and can enable volcano science. In equal part\, sonification of volcanic data can trigger an emotional response\, and thus lead to compelling music. This program will showcase volcano music and the science behind it\, led by University of Oregon professor/violinist Leif Karlstrom and featuring an ensemble of internationally recognized musicians: Todd Sickafoose\, Idit Shner\, Adam Roskiewicz\, and Jonny Rodgers. Featuring composer\, Marc Evanstein. \nAbout the Performers:\n\nLeif Karlstrom came from a family of professional musicians and earth scientists\, and has built a career in both domains. As a violinist he toured nationally and internationally with the bluegrass band Front Country and Small Town Therapy. As a scientist he is an associate professor at the University of Oregon\, where he runs a research group that studies volcanic processes from current activity at Kilauea volcano to climate-altering Large Igneous Province events. He started the Volcano Listening Project in 2023. \n\nTodd Sickafoose is a composer\, producer\, and bassist widely known for his work with Ani DeFranco (since 2004) as well as in jazz ensembles with the likes of Adam Levy\, Jenny Scheinman\, Nels Cline\, and Allison Miller\, as well as his own group. You may be asked to sing some songs from the show. \nThis is a true ensemble piece; everyone is on stage the whole time. Cast will be 10-14 people\, many playing multiple roles. The performance will be May 8-23\, Fri & Sat evenings and Sunday matinees. We look forward to creating with you!

Designed for curious beginners and seasoned art lovers alike\, this series builds a strong foundation in the principles of art design\, composition\, and style. Participants will learn how these elements shape our experience of art and discover new ways to observe\, interpret\, and enjoy the work around us.  \nWith that groundwork in place\, the class will move into focused sessions on landscapes\, abstract art\, portraiture\, and photography. Each week offers guided conversation and close looking\, helping you deepen your understanding of artistic choices and expand your capacity to see with intention. \nNo previous art experience is needed\, just an interest in learning and a desire to engage more fully with art. \nSign up for the entire series\, or choose a specific program that interests you! \n \nAbout the Instructor \nKerry Cobb teaches adult education courses in art history\, art appreciation\, and literature\, bringing an accessible and engaging approach to every subject she leads.
