SUMMARY:Words as Art: Modern Calligraphy Level 2
DESCRIPTION:Move beyond individual letters and discover how words can become expressive works of art. Modern calligraphy is not about making every letter perfect. It is about using shape\, rhythm\, spacing\, and movement to give words personality and meaning. \nIn this supportive\, hands-on workshop\, you will learn how to connect letterforms with greater confidence\, then explore how flourishes and composition can shape the mood of a word or phrase. You will use these techniques to create a balanced hand-lettered composition based on your name\, a meaningful word\, or a short phrase. \nThis workshop is the natural next step after Molly’s Drawing with Letters workshop\, and a welcoming re-entry point for students who have previously studied the modern calligraphy alphabet. \nIn this workshop\, you will learn: \n\nHow to connect calligraphy letters smoothly to form words\nHow spacing and rhythm affect the flow of a hand-lettered composition\nHow to use flourishes as expressive and compositional elements\nHow to create a personalized word or phrase as a finished piece of lettering art\n\nParticipants should be familiar with using a brush pen to create contrasting thick and thin lines and with forming the lowercase modern calligraphy alphabet. These skills are taught in Molly’s Drawing with Letters workshop. \nSupplies needed: \n·       One small-tip brush pen\, such as Tombow Fudenosuke \n·       Smooth\, semi-translucent marker paper (Canson or similar student-grade brand\, 9”x12”) \nDate: Saturday October 24 \nTime: 2pm-4pm \nAges: 14+ \nCost: $65 (register for both workshops for $120) \nLocation: Tokki Art Supply Studio\, 208 4th St\, Hood River OR \nIf you cannot attend a class\, a 72 hour notice prior to the start of the class via email or phone is required for a full refund of the class fee. After that there is no refund. \nStudents will receive a confirmation email of the purchase of the class. And 3 days prior to the class they will receive a reminder email. Please keep a look out for these emails.

SUMMARY:FAHRENHEIT 451 Theater
DESCRIPTION:Fahrenheit 451 is the temperature at which paper catches fire. \nGuy Montag has spent ten years as a fireman\, and in his world that means setting the blazes rather than putting them out. Books are the fuel. It’s steady work and an easy life\, and lately it has started to feel like no life at all — a numbness Montag can’t quite name until he meets Clarisse\, a neighbor who’s full of odd questions and stranger ideas. What she stirs up in him turns dangerous fast. Montag has to choose: keep drifting through an existence that barely qualifies as one\, or risk everything for the right to think for himself. \nRay Bradbury adapted his own 1953 novel for the stage\, and this October\, director Lowry Browning brings it to CCA’s black box theater. Seventy years on\, this story still lands with unsettling force. \n“An incredibly relevant and prophetic adaptation of a classic novel.” — David Longford\, The Royal Company\, Nottingham\, England. \nDoors open a half hour before the show. \nOn stage: OCT 9-25\nFridays and Saturdays at 7 PM\nSundays at 2 PM \nGeneral Admission: $23\nStudent (≤18) and Senior (65+): $21 \nGET TICKETS

There is no cost to participate. Thanks to our sponsors\, all workshop participants receive complimentary day-of admission to the museum. \n🎃 October 31 workshop: Wa’paas participants are encouraged to attend in Halloween costumes! 🎃 \nTo protect the museum collections\, please avoid wearing costumes that can shed (such as feathers\, fur\, or glitter) or have appendages that protrude 4 or more inches from the body (such as large wings or long tails). SUMMARY:Abrazo: An Evening with Nick Jaina Blending Music\, Film + Poetry
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS: https://www.tickettomato.com/event/10353 \n“My friend Andrei in Mexico City tells me that the Spanish word abrazo means so much more than a hug…” \nSo begins the stunning presentation from Nick Jaina\, a poetic film essay called Abrazo that explores the affection missing in the world. \nIn a unique performance\, Nick projects the film while playing gorgeous electric guitar soundscapes and narrating the film live\, all while beautiful videos from the streets of Mexico City flicker behind him. It is a uniquely hopeful experience of soul and body. \nThe film accompanies the book of the same name\, a poetic photo essay that unfolds in full color\, one line on each page. \n— \nNick Jaina was an Oregon Book Award finalist in 2015 for his memoir Get It While You Can\, which is now in its third printing. His writing has appeared in Atlantic Monthly\, McSweeney’s Quarterly and the journal Oregon Humanities. He has released many wonderful albums under his own name\, including 2025’s The Monster Mash. He co-founded and was music director for a ballet company in New York City called Satellite that involved dancers from Juilliard and the New York City Ballet and performed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music\, garnering praise from The New York Times. He has composed scores for feature films and documentaries\, including All Sorts\, Cement Suitcase\, and Elemental: Reimagine Wildfire. \nDoors open at 6:30 pm. 18+ Indoor showQuestions? SUMMARY:Landscape presented by the Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association
DESCRIPTION:The Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association \nLandscape \nGorge Sinfonietta \nFriday\, November 13 at 7 PM\, Sunday November 15 at 2 PM \nWy’east Middle School Performing Arts Center \n  \n  \nThe Gorge Sinfonietta launches an exciting new chapter with the arrival of its new conductor\, Lars Campbell\, making his debut with the ensemble this season\, with Landscape\, an evocative concert celebrating the power and drama of the natural world. \n  \nFramed by the dramatic vistas of the Columbia River Gorge and standing in the twin shadows of Mount Hood and Mount Adams\, the Gorge Sinfonietta’s season premiere mirrors the rugged beauty of the region through musical storytelling. Campbell curated the Landscape program specifically to reflect the majesty and grandeur that define the local community. \n  \n“This program channels the expansive sense of place\, connecting the dramatic natural landscapes of the Columbia River Gorge with the rich\, emotive worlds created by master symphonic composers\,” said Campbell. \n  \nThe concert anchors around Jean Sibelius’ Symphony No. 3\, a work renowned for its pastoral clarity\, organic architecture\, and triumphant\, epic finale that evokes the raw majesty of Nordic vistas—resonating naturally with the Cascade range. Continuing the journey across geography and memory\, Ralph Vaughan Williams’ folk-infused Norfolk Rhapsody No. 1 paints a tender\, misty portrait of an English coastal fishing village\, capturing the reflective\, water-shaped contours of life by the river. Adding dramatic contrast\, Antonín Dvořák’s fiery Hussite Overture ignites the stage with rhythmic drive and historic passion\, carving a rugged musical terrain as commanding as the Gorge canyon itself. \n  \nWith Landscape\, Campbell and the Sinfonietta invite audiences to hear their surroundings anew—bridging the iconic summits of Hood and Adams and the timeless currents of the Columbia River with orchestral masterworks. \n  \nA seasoned conductor and trombonist\, Lars Campbell has led numerous performances for Third Angle New Music\, the Clackamas Wind Ensemble\, and Clackamas Repertory Theater\, in addition to performing with the Oregon Symphony. Drawn to CGOA by the vibrant community support in the Gorge\, Lars focuses on building connection and togetherness through music. Outside of conducting\, he is an avid hiker and kayaker\, an average golfer\, and a passionate fan of composer Leoš Janáček. \n  \nThe Sinfonietta Landscape concerts will be Friday\, November 13 at 7 PM\, and Sunday\, November 15 at 2 PM. Concerts will be at the Wy’east Middle School Performing Arts Center at 3000 Wy’east Rd in Odell. Tickets are available at gorgeorchestra.org. Adults $25; CGOA members $20; students/youth FREE (HS & college students show ID at the door). Also\, $5 tickets are available at the door for SNAP card holders through the Arts for All program. \n  \nThe Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and presenting musical performances of the highest quality in the Columbia River Gorge region. With a commitment to artistic excellence and education\, CGOA brings the joy of music to audiences of all ages. \n
