SUMMARY:Signs of Protest
DESCRIPTION:Your voice matters. And sometimes\, it needs to be seen from across the street. \nIn this hands-on workshop\, you’ll design and create a bold\, reusable protest sign that clearly communicates your message and stands up to real-world use. We’ll focus on clarity\, strength\, and visual impact — because when you speak out\, your sign should carry just as much conviction as you do. \nYou’ll leave not only with a finished piece\, but with practical design skills you can use again and again — for marches\, rallies\, community events\, or any moment that calls for visible solidarity. \nWhat you will learn \nCore principles of effective protest design — how to use color\, contrast\, scale\, and negative space to make your message unmistakable. \n  \nTechniques for transferring and building your design on durable foam core for a sturdy\, reusable sign. \n  \nWeather-resistant color application methods so your sign remains bold\, legible\, and strong outdoors. \nAll materials are provided. This event is on a sliding scale so pay what you can. \nDate: Saturday April 11th \nTime: 3pm-5pm \nAges: 14+ \nCost: $10-$35 sliding scale \nLocation: Tokki Art Supply Classroom

SUMMARY:Roads Not Taken presented by CGOA & Voci Community Choir
DESCRIPTION:The Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association 20th Anniversary Season \nRoads Not Taken \nGorge Sinfonietta and the Voci Community Choir \nFriday and Saturday\, April 17 and 18 at 7 PM\, Sunday April 19 at 2 PM \nWy’east Middle School Performing Arts Center \nCombined performances by the Gorge Sinfonietta and the Voci Community choir are always an event! On April 17\,18 and 19\, the two ensembles will come together for a performance called “Roads Not Taken.” \nThe title comes from a line by Robert Frost\, whose poetry is featured in Frostiana\, a beloved setting of Frost’s poems for choir and orchestra. The 75-voice Voci Choir will be accompanied by a chamber orchestra and conducted by Voci director Dan Kenealy. Composed by Randall Thompson in 1959\, the composer’s simple and appealing music reflects Frost’s plain but profound choice of words. \nThe concert also includes Johannes Brahms’ beloved Academic Festival Overture\, performed by the Gorge Sinfonietta and directed by retiring conductor Mark Steighner. The Academic Festival Overture is one of Brahms’ most lively and tuneful works\, and is partly a tongue-in-cheek setting of several well-known\, 19th century university songs. \nThe finale of the Roads Not Taken concert is the premiere of “Requiem in Five Stages” by Mark Steighner and Dennis Castañares. This work combines Latin texts from the traditional Requiem with original poetry and lyrics. Dennis Castañares – known locally as Alonzo Garbanzo – will play the musical role of a Balladeer\, singing the Requiem’s more pop/folk style songs for which he wrote the music. Steighner and Castanares have previously collaborated on over two dozen songs\, most of which are available on Alonzo Garbanzo’s YouTube channel. \nConcerts are Friday and Saturday\, April 17 and 18 at 7 PM\, and Sunday\, April 19 at 2 PM.  All three performances are at the Performing Arts Center at Wy’east Middle School\, 3000 Wyeast Road\, Hood River (Odell).  Tickets are on sale now at gorgeorchestra.org.  Adults $25; CGOA members $20; students/youth FREE (HS & college students show ID at the door). Also\, $5 tickets are available at the door for SNAP card holders through the Arts for All program. \nThe Gorge Sinfonietta will conclude its season on June 18\, 20 and 21 with a performance titled “Piano Summit.” The concert includes two virtuoso works for piano\, Franz Liszt’s Totentanz and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme by Pagannini. Soloists for the concert will be Kathryn Apland and Mitchell Jett Spencer. The concerts will also mark the end of CGOA’s founder and conductor Mark Steighner’s 20-year tenure with the orchestra. Tickets are available at gorgeorchestra.org. \nThe Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and presenting musical performances of the highest quality in the Columbia River Gorge region. With a commitment to artistic excellence and education\, CGOA brings the joy of music to audiences of all ages.

SUMMARY:The Poetry Wheel: A 6 week journey
DESCRIPTION:The Poetry Wheel is a six-week journey into the ever-turning world of poetry; where inspiration spins in and out like a revolving door. Each week\, participants will explore a different poetic form\, study compelling examples\, and engage in generative writing exercises designed to help uncover their unique voices. \n \nBuilt on curiosity and craft\, the class invites students to read\, write\, listen\, and reflect – again and again – recognizing that poems are elusive creatures\, much like thoughts\, memories\, and dreams. The Poetry Wheel offers a space to learn how to coax these moments into the light. \n \nBy the end of the course\, participants will have a collection of poem drafts in six distinct forms; each one a new spoke on their creative wheel. \n \nThis 6 week program will run on Wednesdays\, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. \n \nAbout the Instructor: \nJulianna Waters holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the Rainier Writing Workshop. Her work has appeared in numerous literary journals\, including CRAFT and The Bellingham Review. Two of her short stories were featured in the speculative fiction anthology A Dark and Stormy Night\, and her writing can also be found in Falling Star Review\, Four and Twenty Magazine\, and American Songwriter Magazine. \n \nWaters has served as a Writer in Residence at the Anderson Arts Center in Red Wing\, Minnesota\, and at Hypatia-in-the-Woods in Shelton\, Washington. Julianna formerly taught writing at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology and is the founder and facilitator of The Poetry Wheel\, a process-focused poetry workshop. \n \nShe lives with her husband and their Pomeranian in Hood River\, Oregon\, where she writes\, weaves\, walks\, and makes music along the life-giving shores of the Columbia River.
