SUMMARY:After the Storm-An Aerial and Theater Performance
DESCRIPTION:From the wreckage of a ship tossed by a mighty storm\, a magical adventure lifts into the air. Through playful aerial movement and imaginative theater\, performers swing\, climb\, and soar as they explore a strange new world shaped by the sea. \nSilks become waves\, masts\, and secret pathways\, guiding the characters as they meet curious sea creatures\, friendly sky beings\, and unexpected helpers along the way. With every twist\, tumble\, and flight\, the journey becomes one of bravery and self-discovery\, reminding young audiences that even after getting lost\, amazing things can happen—and sometimes the greatest treasure is discovering how strong and capable you already are.

SUMMARY:BASQUIAT – Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Step into the electric downtown New York art scene of the late ’70s and ’80s with Basquiat (1996)\, a visually bold biographical drama directed by artist Julian Schnabel. The film follows Jean-Michel Basquiat (Jeffrey Wright) from his early days as a graffiti artist to meteoric success in the gallery world—alongside friendships\, fame\, and the pressures that shadow his rise\, including a close bond with Andy Warhol (David Bowie). \nPresented in partnership with Black in the Gorge. Proceeds benefit Columbia Center for the Arts and Black in the Gorge’s cultural programs. \nFilm details\n\nRuntime: 106 minutes\nDirector/Writer: Julian Schnabel\nStarring: Jeffrey Wright\, David Bowie\, Dennis Hopper\, Gary Oldman\, Benicio del Toro\n\nWhat critics said\n\nRotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus: “…an expressionist portrait of a misfit artist\, masterfully rendered by a riveting Jeffrey Wright.”\nRoger Ebert praised the film’s feel for Basquiat’s work and world\, calling out how the movie helps you sense why the art hit so hard.

SUMMARY:Winter Landscape Plein Air Painting
DESCRIPTION:At the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center: Experience the beauty of the winter Gorge from the warmth of the Discovery Center’s grand\, river-facing windows. This February program brings the spirit of plein air painting indoors\, offering artists a chance to observe and capture the subtle browns\, whites\, and atmospheric tones of the season without braving the cold. \n \nLed by Portland artist Jinnet Powel\, this acrylic class invites participants to slow down\, study the landscape\, and approach winter painting as both creative exploration and a form of quiet meditation. Jinnet will guide students through two foundational plein air techniques: using preliminary thumbnail sketches to clarify composition\, and working with a limited palette to build luminous\, compelling winter scenes. \n \nThis program takes place in the Discovery Center’s naturally lit lobby in front of their floor-to-ceiling windows\, making it an ideal environment for direct observation and artistic focus. Your ticket includes full-day admission to the museum\, allowing you to enjoy its exhibits before or after the class. \n \nTo learn more about the instructor\, visit www.jinnetpowel.com.

SUMMARY:This is an Old Woman The Gorge Photography Club
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to be an “old woman” today? This exhibition by the Gorge Photography Club challenges stereotypes by celebrating three vibrant women who defy easy categorization. \nInspired by Andrea Carlisle’s book There Was an Old Woman\, members of the Gorge Photography Club turned their lenses on three remarkable subjects: Mary Soden\, a nonagenarian poet; Mo Mos\, a septuagenarian artist\, writer\, and poet; and Mary Sandos\, a sexagenarian farmer. Through intimate portraiture\, these images reveal the character\, creativity\, and vitality that define these women’s lives. Each photograph invites viewers to look beyond age and see the full complexity of lives still being actively lived and created\, asking ask us to reconsider our assumptions and recognize that being an “old woman” is not a limitation but a continuation of a life rich with purpose\, passion\, and possibility.
