SUMMARY:BASQUIAT – Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Step into the electric downtown New York art scene of the late ’70s and ’80s with Basquiat (1996)\, a visually bold biographical drama directed by artist Julian Schnabel. The film follows Jean-Michel Basquiat (Jeffrey Wright) from his early days as a graffiti artist to meteoric success in the gallery world—alongside friendships\, fame\, and the pressures that shadow his rise\, including a close bond with Andy Warhol (David Bowie). \nPresented in partnership with Black in the Gorge. Proceeds benefit Columbia Center for the Arts and Black in the Gorge’s cultural programs. \nFilm details\n\nRuntime: 106 minutes\nDirector/Writer: Julian Schnabel\nStarring: Jeffrey Wright\, David Bowie\, Dennis Hopper\, Gary Oldman\, Benicio del Toro\n\nWhat critics said\n\nRotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus: “…an expressionist portrait of a misfit artist\, masterfully rendered by a riveting Jeffrey Wright.”\nRoger Ebert praised the film’s feel for Basquiat’s work and world\, calling out how the movie helps you sense why the art hit so hard.

SUMMARY:Winter Landscape Plein Air Painting
DESCRIPTION:At the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center: Experience the beauty of the winter Gorge from the warmth of the Discovery Center’s grand\, river-facing windows. This February program brings the spirit of plein air painting indoors\, offering artists a chance to observe and capture the subtle browns\, whites\, and atmospheric tones of the season without braving the cold. \n \nLed by Portland artist Jinnet Powel\, this acrylic class invites participants to slow down\, study the landscape\, and approach winter painting as both creative exploration and a form of quiet meditation. Jinnet will guide students through two foundational plein air techniques: using preliminary thumbnail sketches to clarify composition\, and working with a limited palette to build luminous\, compelling winter scenes. \n \nThis program takes place in the Discovery Center’s naturally lit lobby in front of their floor-to-ceiling windows\, making it an ideal environment for direct observation and artistic focus. Your ticket includes full-day admission to the museum\, allowing you to enjoy its exhibits before or after the class. \n \nTo learn more about the instructor\, visit www.jinnetpowel.com.
