Words as Art: Modern Calligraphy Level 2
October 24 @ 2:00 pm
Move beyond individual letters and discover how words can become expressive works of art. Modern calligraphy is not about making every letter perfect. It is about using shape, rhythm, spacing, and movement to give words personality and meaning.
In this supportive, hands-on workshop, you will learn how to connect letterforms with greater confidence, then explore how flourishes and composition can shape the mood of a word or phrase. You will use these techniques to create a balanced hand-lettered composition based on your name, a meaningful word, or a short phrase.
This workshop is the natural next step after Molly’s Drawing with Letters workshop, and a welcoming re-entry point for students who have previously studied the modern calligraphy alphabet.
In this workshop, you will learn:
- How to connect calligraphy letters smoothly to form words
- How spacing and rhythm affect the flow of a hand-lettered composition
- How to use flourishes as expressive and compositional elements
- How to create a personalized word or phrase as a finished piece of lettering art
Participants should be familiar with using a brush pen to create contrasting thick and thin lines and with forming the lowercase modern calligraphy alphabet. These skills are taught in Molly’s Drawing with Letters workshop.
Supplies needed:
· One small-tip brush pen, such as Tombow Fudenosuke
· Smooth, semi-translucent marker paper (Canson or similar student-grade brand, 9”x12”)
