The Wasco County Historical Society invites the public to hear CHERYL BAILEY ORTEGA share the 100+ year history, from its origin in 1923 by Walter and Mabel Bailey to current day, of her family’s ORCHARD VIEW FARMS, inducted three years ago into the State’s Century Farm Program. In 2009, Brenda Bailey Thomas was promoted to President of the company. She is the fourth generation of the Bailey Family in management.
Currently, their cherry business totals 3500 acres, owned or leased, including acreage in Dallesport, and in Wasco, Hood River, and Sherman counties. During peak season, they employ 700-800 pickers and nearly 300 employees in and around their packing house.
Ms. Ortega will tell of the many varieties of cherries today, what happens to these cherries in their packing house, how and where they are marketed, and the successes and frustrations in their multi-generational business.
Admission is free but donations are welcome. Refreshments.
