The Gorge Sinfonietta launches an exciting new chapter with the arrival of its new conductor, Lars Campbell, making his debut with the ensemble this season, with Landscape, an evocative concert celebrating the power and drama of the natural world.
Framed by the dramatic vistas of the Columbia River Gorge and standing in the twin shadows of Mount Hood and Mount Adams, the Gorge Sinfonietta’s season premiere mirrors the rugged beauty of the region through musical storytelling. Campbell curated the Landscape program specifically to reflect the majesty and grandeur that define the local community.
“This program channels the expansive sense of place, connecting the dramatic natural landscapes of the Columbia River Gorge with the rich, emotive worlds created by master symphonic composers,” said Campbell.
The concert anchors around Jean Sibelius’ Symphony No. 3, a work renowned for its pastoral clarity, organic architecture, and triumphant, epic finale that evokes the raw majesty of Nordic vistas—resonating naturally with the Cascade range. Continuing the journey across geography and memory, Ralph Vaughan Williams’ folk-infused Norfolk Rhapsody No. 1 paints a tender, misty portrait of an English coastal fishing village, capturing the reflective, water-shaped contours of life by the river. Adding dramatic contrast, Antonín Dvořák’s fiery Hussite Overture ignites the stage with rhythmic drive and historic passion, carving a rugged musical terrain as commanding as the Gorge canyon itself.
With Landscape, Campbell and the Sinfonietta invite audiences to hear their surroundings anew—bridging the iconic summits of Hood and Adams and the timeless currents of the Columbia River with orchestral masterworks.
A seasoned conductor and trombonist, Lars Campbell has led numerous performances for Third Angle New Music, the Clackamas Wind Ensemble, and Clackamas Repertory Theater, in addition to performing with the Oregon Symphony. Drawn to CGOA by the vibrant community support in the Gorge, Lars focuses on building connection and togetherness through music. Outside of conducting, he is an avid hiker and kayaker, an average golfer, and a passionate fan of composer Leoš Janáček.
The Sinfonietta Landscape concerts will be Friday, November 13 at 7 PM, and Sunday, November 15 at 2 PM.
