Anatomy of a Painting – 6 week series
October 14, 2025 @ 9:30 am
Join local artist and art educator Michelle Yamamoto for a 6-week workshop series designed for beginner-intermediate artists ready to deepen their practice. Michelle is a muralist and exhibiting artist with the Portland Art Museum Rental Sales Gallery, known for her generous teaching style and 15+ years of experience guiding students in the fundamentals of art.
Course Overview
This series introduces the core principles of composition and design. Through slideshows, discussion, and guided exercises, you’ll learn how to:
- Thoughtfully plan your paintings before you begin
- Use “edges” to guide the viewer’s attention
- Simplify design for stronger, more engaging artwork
Project Focus
Students may choose to paint a classic Hood River sunset (images provided) or work on a personal project of their choice. If you bring your own subject, please share your reference image with Michelle in advance so she can help you select the best option for applying these concepts.
Materials Provided
Michelle will supply sketch paper, pencils, and erasers, plus a sampling of her “secret sauce” color palette and brushes for exploring new techniques in mark-making.
Student Supplies
A full supply list for acrylic or oil paints and canvas will be provided upon registration.
